** 2 1/2 Mile Run For Cancer---Need your advice**
I signed up today to run 2 1/2 miles for cancer next week, I haven't ran solid for that distance in a very long time and I really want to do well and finish strong. There are money prizes for the top 3 finishers and I would love to finish in the top 3 so I could donate all the prize money back to the Cancer foundation. My questions are>>> How should I prepare for this run? What should I eat before the run and how long should I eat before th run? My Dad's sister died from cancer two years ago and I will be running in her honor and this really means alot to me & my family and I thank any and all of you for any help/advice you can give me.
Mike....

What time of day is the run?
I prefer not doing long bike rides with a lot of food in my stomach so I generally load up the night before for early morning rides. Apart from that, simple carbs just prior the event and plenty of water are keys for me.
Good luck with the race.

Hey man -
Since the race is coming up pretty soon, there isn't a whole lot of time to prepare. Luckily, you aren't running a marathon IMO, the most critical aspect of this race will be to pace yourself. A top 3 finish would be fantastic, though you need to ensure that you don't push yourself too hard too soon. In the next couple of days, I would gear up and go for a run - don't set a mileage limit, but just run until you can't go any further. Test your limits.
As for race day, much of your success will be dependent on your mentality. You are running for a great cause and there is no doubt that the inspiration of your mission will push you onward. 2.5 miles should take you anywhere from 20-30 minutes (depending, of course, on your endurance and pace). Personally, before running, I always tell myself that the next X amount of minutes may be hard, exhausting and demanding, but the reward at the end is entirely worth it. Confidence in yourself in the number one key to success here. Approach this run like you do weights - walk up to the starting line already 100% convinced you're going to succeed. Also, be sure to get those carbs in you, starting the day before the race. Pasta,bread,etc...get 'em in. For runners, carbs are key.
I wish you the best of luck man and truly admire the cause you are running for. Be determined and I am sure you will reach your goal!

Sounds good, I just want to be as well prepared as I can and run like the wind lol... I run 3 days a week on the track that goes around the outside of my gym but I just jog at a steady pace for a few laps....nothing special.

I don't have much advice to give, but good luck! I did my first 5k for battered women a month or so back and it was pure hell for me. I do all my cardio on the eliptical and I have asthma. I totally wasn't prepared and either were my shins and lungs. Train outside and work your way up distance wise leading up the race. Train on the actual course you will be running if you can. That way you are ready for the hills etc. Get to work, only got a week
