Not really, organize is the Americans spell it and organise is the way the English and Aussies spell it (ie the proper way). To spell it with a z is definitely not tolerated in Australia, people get marked down for things like that.

    This^ is mostly wrong.

British spelling has always recognized the existence of variant spellings using the suffix -ize/-ise. When American spelling was standardized during the 19th century (mainly through the efforts of the great American lexicographer Noah Webster), the consistent use of -ize was one of the conventions that became established. However, since then, the -ise spellings have become more popular in Britain (and in other English-speaking countries such as Australia), perhaps partly as a reaction against the American custom. Spellings such as organisation would have struck many older British writers as rather French-looking. The Oxford English Dictionary favoured -ize, partly on the linguistic basis that the suffix derives from the Greek suffix -izo, and this was also the style of Encyclopaedia Britannica (even before it was American-owned) and formerly of the Times newspaper.
Either spelling is fine, as long as you are consistent.
"The Scots invented everything - the Thermos flask, the television set, the Venetian blind, the Irish jig, the Norwegian wood, the Dutch cap, the French letter-"
    "The Jewish New Year?"
"And that. Also the Welsh harp, Kentucky Fried Chicken, New York, New York-"
    "It's a wonderful town."
"The Greek Tragedy, the Roman Holiday and the Turkish Delight. Not to mention the American Pie."
    "The American Pie?"
"I told y' not to mention that."

Well I'm Canadian and we follow the english spelling with words like "favourite" and "honour". But with organize. I use the zed as you can see (the american way).

Arr how is any of what I wrote where you quoted me wrong, I said it's spelt differently by Aussies and the English than Americans. It is also the proper way, because it was the original spelling and now it's the most widespread, so your point is null. And the point about it not being tolerated is right also, lecturers get really pissed off when people spell it the wrong way.

There is not a proper way. In my experience lecturers do not really care which you use.

Although I agree that -ise is used more in Australia (a ratio of about 3:1) the Macquarie Dictionary includes both spellings. The ratio between -ise and -ize is 3:2 in Britain. So you are correct -ise is more common. But the main reason for that is people reacting against using what they think is an Americanism (where -ize is the standardized spelling).

The -ize spelling is preferred by some pretty damn authoritative British sources including the Oxford English Dictionary. The -ize suffix is used in many British academic publications and worldwide, -ize endings prevail in scientific writing and are commonly used by many international organizations.

    From the Oxford English Dictionary
[T]he suffix..., whatever the element to which it is added, is in its origin the Gr[eek] -ιζειν, L[atin] -izāre; and, as the pronunciation is also with z, there is no reason why in English the special French spelling in -iser should be followed, in opposition to that which is at once etymological and phonetic.

This is what I find funny.

The US is imperial obviously. So when you are talking weight it is lbs, and height is feet etc.

But when you guys are talking about small increments of measurements you use mg and stuff? What is up with that? Why the change to metric? All the guys talking about PH's and the amounts to take and you start talking in mg? Weird.
