I've heard from some people that they've done a protein shake diet and they were able to lose fat without losing any muscle. I was wondering, since I am a skinny-fat guy, would this be a good idea?
Lifting weights 4 days a week, 3 40g protein shakes a day, a chicken breast and cereal in the morning.
Oh, and pleeeaasssee don't tell me I'm too skinny. My weight is too low because I have too little muscle, not too little fat, and that is why I want to do the protein shake diet to lose the fat and keep the muscle I already have before I can put my full focus on muscle building.

Whey is just a powdered form of high protein food, so yes, you can get your protein that way. You can do the same think with broiled chicken, grilled fish, or any other lean meat.
Protein is not all that you need. Muscle anabolism is triggered by a combination of two chemical signals; the presence of the BCAA leuciene and the presence of insulin. You need both protein and some carbs to get the anabolic response going. Muscle development also needs essential fats, vitamins, and minerals so I hope your diet consists of more than just whey shakes, cereal, and chicken. Why diet down when you can build it up!!
At your age just start eating clean and lift hard and you will build muscle that will make you look better than bieng 135pds and ripped.
You will be suprized how much better you will look if you put on ten pounds of muscle before you cut any.Chris
Do I look like I workout dumb@ss!!
Yea I got my headphones on because I want you to stop and talk thanks moron!!

You are correct. That is not your question. But you can't expect for a 6' 2", 150 lb 16 year old to ask that question and not get as a response "What the hell are you dieting for?"
There's a great expression: "If everyone says you're drunk, sit down."
Most literally, it means if everyone says you're drunk, then don't argue with them. You're drunk. Accept it. Sit down.
Here, everyone says you don't need to diet. You need to eat and lift. Just like if everyone says you're drunk, you need to sit down, if everyone says you need to eat and lift, you need to eat and lift.05/24/2009, 186.2 lbs

In a bulk you have a caloric surplus. Three 40 gm protein shakes will have about 500 calories. A 6 oz (pretty big) skinless chicken breast has 275 calories and 50 gm of protein.
A cup of corn flakes and a cup of whole milk has 236 calories. So you have a grand total of about 1000 calories. That ain't no caloric surplus.05/24/2009, 186.2 lbs

The four protein shakes add up to 850 calories. And with 200 calories of cereal and 300 calories of chicken plus the ****load of milk I drink everyday, I'm up to around 1500. I know that's not a lot, but it's enough to put on some muscle, right? Sorry, I don't mean to keep pestering you, but I fail to see why with all this protein and a fairly low caloric intake would not qualify as a clean bulk.

I don't know man, If I was on that diet I'd be sick. (did only protein to cut weight for wrestling) I do know that the flora in your stomach need fiber and amino's to properly break down and store the food your eating. I'd seriously advise against the "shake diet" even thought the math on the calories and such look attractive.

^^^^^^^THIS.
OP: At your age, weight and height, you need to be running a caloric surplus, not a deficit, if you want to gain muscle. It's that simple.
In all seriousness, you may have body perception issues. A problem with 90lb female anorexics is that they actually look in the mirror and see a fat person. Everyone else sees the truth, a skeleton, but they see a skin fold and see fat. If you are 6' 2" and 150 lbs your BMI is 19.2, still in the normal range, but close to being officially underweight, which as these BMI tables go, is seriously underweight. If you see yourself as fat, that may be a serious body perception problem.05/24/2009, 186.2 lbs

I tried the protein shake diet while lifting weights and I can tell you that I lost more weight and gained more muscle when I switched to real food and only 2 protein shakes per day. I currently am losing .4 .lbs per day and gaining a little muscle each week by having :
1 pure protein shake with oats and almonds for breakfast = 400 cals
half grilled chicken without skin and steamed veggies for lunch = 600 cals
pre workout meal of nonfat yogurt and nuts = 250 cals
post workout drink 1 scoop waxy maize 2 scoops whey = 400 cals
dinner of grilled turkey with steamed veggies = 400 cals
