Workouts While Traveling
Those of you who have to travel for work, how do you stay on top of the workouts/diet while on the road? I am about to hit the road and have no idea if the gym at the hotel is crap. Since my schedule won't be my own, it is difficult to keep the diet/eating schedule in place. Thoughts?

When I travel, I check ahead for local gyms. I've only ever stayed in one hotel that had a decent gym. Many motels/hotels without in-house facilities have deals worked out with nearby fitness centers/gyms, where you can train at a discount or for free. Ask. Otherwise, most gyms will admit you at "day rate," charges to train by the day or week. Check the Yellow Pages when you arrive at your motel/hotel. Even little hole-in-the-wall towns usually have at least one "fitness" center.
The nutrition end of things is much more difficult. You're pretty much on your own as far as making good choices at restaurants, very often not an easy thing to do. Where there's a will, however, there's always a way.
Bottom line, just do your best, and don't stress-out if things aren't perfect.

I usually travel overseas 2 to 3 times a year, mainly to asia and europe. In europe its not so hard to find hotels with decent gyms although they are usually 5 star American owned hotel chains and you pay throught he nose for them. In asia, it is very difficult to find hotels with a decent gym. Most of the ones that do have them, have very limited free weights. The last one I stayed in for example, had free weights and the heaviest dumbells were 25 kg (55lbs). They had cable machines which were ok to use but really cheaply made, but they worked. Nutrition gets thrown out the window and I just have to try to have a rough estimate of the cals Im eating. I do not take any supps with me when I travel OS, for fear of being stopped at customs, particularly in asia. Its not that theres anything illegal that I carry, its just the thought of trying to explain what the powdery substance is in the protein bottle could have you arrested. Most asian countries have some of the toughest laws in the world and you could be arrested until they test whats in your supps and god only knows how long that would take, so its not worth the risk. I am actually flying out at the end of next week to China for about 7 days and because I will be in 5 different city's in 7 days, I have had to spend more time finding hotels with gyms than I will probably be in the country for, LOL.

I usually just do push ups, prison squats and buprees. Simple exercises work wonders for staying fit while on the go.

I'm in Vegas right now for work and I head to the local gym(Fitness 19)
I also belong to one back home so it's no problem to have a guest pass here.
I love it and it works out great!!
When I don't have a Fitness 19, I use the Hotel fitness center.

I haven't had to do any traveling for a few years but when I did I would do body squats, lunges, tricep dips using the chair in the room, push-ups, etc. Most times the gyms at the hotels only had a couple of treadmills and some questionable weights.

I travel occasionally for work and have found that most "gyms" in motels are pretty spartan affairs, with a multi-station machine and a couple of treadmills. Now, I will just pay a casual rate at a nearby gym.....it is worth it to use good gear!
As far a nutrition goes, I pack snap lock bags of protein powder (single serving sizes) and take a shaker bottle. The motels I frequent have gotten used to having a room service order for "2 large grilled fish fillets and just fill the rest of the plate with brocolli"..........that type of order freaks em' out the first couple of times!!
While out on the road during the day, I order fish and salad sandwiches on wholegrain bread, no sauce.
I also pack some protein bars, in case I am stuck in a meeting and the only food provided is pizza or some other greasy crap!!!
I have always found the biggest problem is to take the time to eat while travelling on business. Now, I just set my mobile phone alarm to go off every 2hrs and eat........no matter what
