you need both horizontal and vertical pulling to develop impressive back size. The main benefit of rowing are that they can take the strain off your shoulders from excess pressing. If i was to choose from pullups or barbell rows, i would choose the rows all day long. (i'm not saying that cause i am poor at pullups cause i can do 25 pullups at 200+lbs)

A few weeks ago I realized why my lats were getting bigger lol I always thought pullups/chinups only got arms.....
