Wolf Hunting
Just picked up my wolf tag. Now to find them. Last year during elk hunting, everytime I called they would start coming in. Hopefully it will be the same this year.
Also wanted to see how fellow hunters and other outdoors people fell about the wolf hunts?

Good luck.
Not something I would ever do, but I do understand the need for it.
P.S. whereabouts do you elk hunt?

Area 39 (near Barber Flat) is where I normally hunt as well. I've never gone elk hunting, just deer. Supposedly there is bear as well, but I have never cut any tracks as of yet.

As far as eating goes, I prefer autumn bear over venison.

Minnesota has had a problem with their Timber Wolf population for years; Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming are rapidly joining them. I believe Michigan has a pretty high population as well.

They were gone from a LOT of areas, but were reintroduced. Most of the peeps in the areas they've been reintroduced and protected are pretty pissed about it from what I understand. Lot of ripped up sporting dogs and decimated deer populations and such. Just what I've heard...
It's great they're issuing tags for them up there in Idaho, is this a new thing or have yall always had them?

First year they have been issued, since wolves became 'endangered'.
Also, in a lot of the areas where they were reintroduced - they used a larger, more agressive subspecies than what was originally there. T
The wolves reintroduced out west came from northern Minnesota, timberwolves from there were larger and more agressive than the original 'Yellowstone' wolves.

Good luck!
Last fall a buddy of mine and I went coyote hunting in northern MN(not many coyotes up there cause of the wolves....but figured we'd try) after classes one day.
Our 2nd set of the night, I was sitting at the base of a tree on the edge of a clearing with my friend behind me and to the right, watching the opposite way. I was calling for about 10 minutes with rabbit distress call and I see a wolf head pop up about 60 yards away on the other side of the clearing.
I ended up calling it to within 5 yards of me until it finally caught our scent. It was pretty damn intense. Can't shoot them here, but it was still pretty awesome getting that close to one without it knowing I was there.

i understand hunting for food but hunting predatory animals is just stupid. you really going to eat the wolf? highly doubt it.
also...how can you kill wolves yet hold a dog? you do realize the hypocrisy, right?

Perhaps if you were a rancher who's livestock is being predated by wolves you would see things differently.
If you were a hunter and saw game populations dwindling due to predation you might think otherwise as well.

I see your point, but in regards to the wolf populations out here in the west the current populations were not an indigenous sub-species. The transplanted wolves are much larger and aggresive wolves than what originally was out here.
Granted our activities decimated the original population, but the replacements are worse than the original.

You must be wearing a wolf T-shirt right now eh?
Wolves are overpopulated and problematic and need to be thinned out. They are one of the few animals out there that kill for sport. Nothing wrong with killing predators, we are in fact predators so taking out the competition is by all means natural. If you want to target the real problem get rid of the humans, would that make you happy?

Ya, they were "endangered" a few years ago and now they're endangering everything else. Farmers are not too happy about the re-introducing.

It's kind of strange that MN and MI both have high wolf populations, but not WI.
Don't you agree?

The current population of wolves (in Idaho) is around 700.
The estimated tags the Idaho Fish and Game plans to sell in Idaho will be around 105.
(The number of tags to be sold is based on the wolf population)
This plan would allow hunting of about 15% of the current estimated population of wolves.
Not everyone that wants a tag will get one, and not everyone that gets a tag will actually kill a wolf. This is being very well regulated.

I think wolves are beautiful animals and I have a lot of respect for them as individuals and as packs, and I personally would never hunt them myself.
That being said, that does not mean that I do not see and understand the need for a regulated hunting season.

Yeah I think you are right, I dont hear much talk about wolves in WI. The DNR reintroduced them here in the 80s
