he admittedly had a less than wasp-like waistline but managed to cover it up splendidly with twisted posing and his massive torso and chest took away from a wider waist.
and it isnt really that wide IMO, it's in good proportion to everything else
-
On the way to 200+ pounds
yep, he had a naturally wide waist, 34 inches.

he had a pretty wide waist, but it was thin and flat so it looked like it was 2 inches from the side.

Our Arnold, whose arms are heavy,
Vascular be thy veins
Nine sets of lunges, ten reps be done,
To add girth as it is to strengthen.
Give us this day our daily protein, and forgive us of our fats,
As we forgive those who are fat too.
And lead us not into overtraining, nor deliver us pizzas,
For thou art the king of the dumbell, the power clean, and the steroids forever,
Amen.

34 inches is the measure of the waist around, doesn't tell us how wide/narrow it is.... Arnold's waist was TINY from the side
I have a 34 inch waist, not very wide... my training partner is about 33 inch and is relatively wide waisted

yeah it was no Jay Cutler, but relatively speaking, it was one of the wide waists on stage (just like we say Phil Heath a couple of years ago was narrow, Johny Jacksons quads are weak etc... its all relative to other competitors)
Arnold changed his posing to avoid showing his waist from the front head on in front double biceps etc, adding a little twist

I'd actually argue the opposite. Being a pioneer of anything is never easy and it amazes me how great Arnie still compares when you realize how far the science of bodybuilding has come. It was an uphill battle for guys back then. The diets, supplements, workouts, 'drugs' if you will, was all completely different. Remember, much of the information and knowledge we know today wasn't available.
If you focus just on the posing, it's physically impossible for many mass monsters of today to even hit a vacuum pose. So I'd say in the eyes of today's bodybuilders, describing it as 'easy' is relative.
Putting a man on the moon might be easy for today's standards, but that doesn't make it any less significant in 1969.

It was wide compared to guys like Sergio Oliva Frank Zane and Serge Nubret but it was always tight and controlled.
May the aesthetics be with you.

He was joking. He did not actually mean that bodybuilding was really easy back then.
Also, putting a man on the moon runs into more challenges today than it did in 69, jus sayin'.

Mainly funding and politics, but not technology wise, which was my point.

Different problems arise with different technology, but today's combustion engine, aside from the occasional 'lemon', is by far more safe and efficient than the first steam driven boilers despite the new challenges. This is all way off topic though.

x2, but yes he had a wide waist. As you said though, he covered it up with twisting poses
However, i don't think "thick" and "wide" mean the same thing. people with a gut or somewhere close to it are what I call "thick-waisted" whereas someone like Jay Cutler who can hold his waist tight and even suck it inward but still has width there has a wide waist

if his waist is wide what size is yours? equator?
-
Veni Vidi Vici
no pro bodybuilder has the sized waist they claim...
your average man has between 30 to 40inch waistline right....
and these pro's all claim around 32inch....
fact of the matter is the majority of bodybuilders are distended as all hell.
they are so wide that they can lie about the circumfrance of their waists and get away with it.
I wish it lasted, forever.

the width is not the circumference, just the length from right to left. As well, a wide waist refers to the structure, not the amount of fat there. You can have chiseled abs and still have a wide waist.
