What to do Misc..Used car broke down 3 days after buying it

Got a camry for 6600 and at it has been running flawlessly until today when i was driving in a court, it randomly just shut down. The steering wheel locked, the brakes locked and the engine shut off. Thank god i wasn't on the freeway when it happened or i would have been screwed.

Im pissed at the dealer who sold us the car. The mechanic said that the law in texas says that you have 30 days to return a used car for refund, so that might be what it comes down to. But i have taken the car to my mechanic and they are running a diagnostic, so when they figure out what is wrong, i will call the dealer and tell him to pay for it, or else i will just return it.

this the right thing to do?

Lemon law for the win. I lucked out on my dealer, they have pretty good customer service. Battery conked out a few weeks after I got my Trailblazer and they replaced it for free. (They supposedly put a new one in before I took delivery, doubtful)

I noticed in the summertime that some of the stickers they had on it left a residue, so I took it in and told them to wash it off lulz

They have a good rewards program too for getting the maintenance done there.

so is it the law that he has to replace it?? I really like the car, and it drove great until this shiat. If he doesn't replace it can i threaten him by saying he is selling lemon cars?

Different states have different laws. You need to seriously research it before you run out of options. Some laws last only a few days re: lemon laws. If it did it within 72 hours make sure to document within that time. It could save your thousands. If you use an attorney I think the only way you can re-coup atty fees is if you use civil courts (I dont think small claims allows the recoup of atty fees).

I could be wrong, but lemon laws only apply to new cars.

You take your chances on a used car.

Sounds like you're going about it how I would.. see whats wrong first and then let em know and see how they handle it.

Im not licensed to practice law but I have extensive internet forum experience.

If law is 30 days you should be safe. Contact dealer ASAP. MAKE SURE IT IS IN WRITING AND YOU GET IT VIA CERTIFIED MAIL WITH RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTED.

I think lemon laws apply more to used cars. No one expects a new car to be a lemon.

Well at least around here dealers have a certain obligation to provide a decent car. Private sales are "as-is". That's it. Done.

When buying a car from a dealer around here they are required to provide I think 30 days guarantee. I think. OP should have known this and/or asked before buying car.

A private dealer cannot knowingly sell a used car "as-is" without explicitly notifying the buyer of any known problems. If they say the car is good and they know it isn't, they are liable.
