They are absolutely amazing, In Absentia ranks up in my top 10 favorite albums I love the atmosphere on that disk and the story of a boy growing into a deranged serial killer. FUKKING SICK.

i'd have to say my favorite album of theirs is The Sky Moves Sideways. It's different, but AMAZING.
Trains is a great song, and really fun to play on guitar.

Thanks for the reps and all but damn... the band you posted isn't even in the same league...
wow didn't expect that its a shame you think so, ASOL are awesome IMO. Less techinical granted. The albums a bit different though a bit more dredge like if your into that sort of thing.
What album should I start with? Do they have a single outstanding release? I prefered way out of here to the live track

Initially I thought yeah very cool then is went on too long and i thought its got a bit self indulgent.

Wilson has made comments about music being self indulgent and I'll have to agree.... If it's not self indulgent, it's made for some one else and directed to sell basically. Which, makes it lose creativity..
Edit: and also, how long is a song supposed to be??? 3 minutes? Guess i missed that memo

new album is pretty boring, but still love the band to death.
porcupine tree albums must be listened to a lot before you can say they are boring. This is not light listening.
When I first heard Deadwing, I was bored. After about 3 listens, I loved it all.
Same with Fear of a Blank Planet.

SO far, I love the new one. So diverse.
I'm aware of this and perhaps 'boring' was a poor word, but I generally just don't find the album too appealing, and I've listened to it a solid 5-6 times already. I'm sure it will grow on me, but overall, it's their weakest album yet.

I enjoy and appreciate them, but I think they are a bit over rated. I just don't find myself going back to listen again and again. I love songs like Heartattack in a Lay By, Trains, Arriving Somewhere But Not Here, etc. but I find that a lot of their songs sound similar. The vocalist doesn't have much of a range either. I have Stupid Dream, In Absentia, and Deadwing.
i think u have to listen to porcupine tree ALBUMS, not just songs. Love them, don't know if i put them a superior to Tool, but def top of the prog rock scene
