bedtime snack - Greek yogurt vs. cottage cheese

Anyone got a preference here? CC is much cheaper, but how about in terms of nutrition?

A 5.3 oz individual serving of plain Oikos organic Greek yogurt delivers 15g of protein vs 13g per half cup of cottage cheese - both with 80 calories. Greek yogurt only has 60mg of sodium vs 400mg for cottage cheese.

I like to mix lemon sugar free pudding mix into my greek yogurt, and add an apricot, blueberries or raspberries and a couple packets of Equal. This comes to a cost of about $2.50 per serving, but it's soooo good.

Plus, it's actually a bit lower in calories than my former favorite 1/2 cup of cottage cheese, 1 tbsp of natty pb, butterscotch or pistachio non-sugar pudding mix, 1 packet of Equal.

I love greek yogurt. the Chobani plain stuff has 23g protein / 9g carbs. I throw in some splenda and sometimes whey protein for flavor.

I can barely stomach CC. Especially the watery lower fat garbage. I can manage if it has some fruit or something in it, but I'd rather pay whatever amount extra for greek yogurt any day.

Really, CC tastes great if you mix it with Equal and some cinnamon. Add a serving of pudding mix (vanilla, butterscotch, pistachio) and a tbsp of natty PB, and it's heaven.

How much pudding mix are you adding to a cup of the yogurt? I really like the Oikos organic honey, but tried adding just fresh fruit to the plain Oikos and it wasn't enough to improve the taste/tang.

I put in 1 serving of pudding (about 1/4 of the package). I also put in 2 Equal sweetener packets. I do this with the Oikos plain - not the honey version.

I use the same brand. Experiment adding different protein powders until you find the one that taste good. For me, 1/2 serving of XF Whey Mochaccino with 6oz of plain Oikos is nom nom. Do not want those sugary carbs from their flavored kinds.

After workout, just before bedtime ( I workout at 8:30 till 9:45 and go to bed at 10:30) I eat greek yogourt mixed with whey and a splash of milk (for better mixing purpose) and add a banana. Sometimes some Kashi too.

I used to pick things like this apart. Nutrient-wise, greek yogurt is probably "better" or "healthier" in terms of the body builder's rule book. In the same sense, I dont think eating the cottage cheese instead is going to deprive you of so much protein that your muscles start to wither away.

Which do you prefer? Eat that one. Or switch it up. Don't over think things.

+1 You don't like cottage cheese, don't eat it. Don't like Greek yogurt, don't eat it. When it all comes to the bottom line, one or 2 grams of protein between the two is really meaningless.

    For me, I like both.

This, completely. The Chobani plain is my choice too, but I do have some of their other flavor as well. They do fruit-on-the-bottom so it's super tasty when mixed together. More calories and sugar in those ones though, so I reserve them more for "treats".

I actually eat a bowl of fat-free Greek yogurt (no added sugar) mixed with a bit of Stevia sweetener before hitting the sack. This I find much more pleasing to the taste compared to cottage cheese. I don't think it makes much of a difference as far as the amount or quality of casein is concerned. It should be more or less similar.

    Cottage Cheese

Let's not forget the quality of the proteins. You want caseins before bed, and cottage cheese is unbeatable there. Also, I love the taste of cottage cheese more than any yogurt

Let's not forget the quality of the proteins. You want caseins before bed, and cottage cheese is unbeatable there. Also, I love the taste of cottage cheese more than any yogurt

    Yogurt vs. Cottage Cheese

Both are viable options. They both contain mostly casein, due to the way they are produced. Optimally you would want to eat either of them mixed with a bit of whey protein powder. That would allow you to maximize the effects of the growth hormone release in your first full sleep cycle. As far as all the concoctions go, I don't know. I have no problem with the taste of either so when it comes down to it I just choose whichever will give me the most bang for my buck and keep me within my caloric parameters, although I do love pudding so maybe they're onto something with this pudding mix stuff.

Switch it up. That's what I do. Usually i'll go for the greek yogurt because it's easier to find in low sodium, but they're both fine choices.
