One more year of law school left

been clerking at an employment/bankruptcy/family law firm this summer, and keep working there during the semester.

i've heard horror stories about family law. people are so emotional..they threaten the lawyers and act erratically. have you see any of this?

how many hrs do you work per week? doesn't the work interfere with your grades?

Have you had a hard time through the years? Is it as hard as painted to become a lawyer?

first year is pretty out of control, but after that it gets a lot easier. It's really hard and the atmosphere doesn't help because it's hard PLUS all your peers just obsess about how hard it is and school, and some people just turn into weirdos because their entire life becomes school and they lose their personalities. If you actually want to be a lawyer and have a reasonable amount of intelligence though you can definately make it through as long as you try your hardest. I don't know anyone that failed out, people at my school just dropped out because they didn't like law school, but I dunno even one person that failed out.

I haven't done that much family law, mostly I do employment law. Post first year is a lot different than first year. First year you can't work at all, it's just impossible, no way can you do your work and work even part time. But after first year it kind of becomes a mix between undergrad and first year law school, and it's a lot easier to manage work and school because your workload drops.

mostly, but you also have a legal research and writing class, no exam for that class, just lots of briefs you have to do, and then a final one at the end that makes up most of your writing and research grades.

probably around 150k ish once I'm done. But I had my undergrad taken care of so I'm not that screwed

Haha, family law you have awesome stories.

And I don't get what's so bad about his statement. School IS > Work. Easy schedule, plenty of time on the weekends to lift, hang out, don't have to wake up before noon most of the time, etc.

i'd love to get a phd in economics and a law degree. would cost a lot of $ though.

would rather study than work a 9-5 entry level job.

yea court room stuff is just litigating, and most lawyers do transactional stuff and don't actually litigate. So either transactional stuff or litigation mostly.

Going to be a 3L. I'd rather keep going to law school than work honestly though. Having money is good, but school > work no matter what. I'm going on my 7th year of school in a row, and I'd still rather keep doing this forever than work. Anyone who is excited to go into the "real world" either is nuts or didn't have any kind of fun school experience.

litigation = going to court and being a stereotypical lawyer

transaction = doing contract work/ going over documents


But you really can't do anything else with a law degree other than a lawyer. It's like getting an M.D and then not being a doctor, all a J.D is the formality degree you need before you can start practicing law as an attorney. I guess you can be an agent with a J.D also, but that's still being a lawyer, you are basically just practicing agency law as an agent.
