Before starting Rippetoe's (plus chins/dips and abs) I was doing a 5x5 type program where I ramped up each set. 3-4 compounds + 1-2 assistance lifts per day, 4 days a week, 1.5 hours a workout. Finishing a Rippetoe workout leaves me feeling more beat up and exhausted than doing 5x5 ever did. 3x5 allows for a much higher level of intensity on each set, and I feel like I get a much better workout at the end of the day.
The more you know, the more you squat.

I was on Stronglifts, which is 5x5 with sets across like Rippetoes. Eventually I dropped the last two sets on my squats. But man, you're right. The only way I can describe it is like you're shedding old skin. As gross as that image is.
I only seem like I know what I'm talking about, because I only talk about things that I know about.
"One farmer says to me: 'You cannot live on vegetable foods solely, for it furnishes nothing to make bones with,' walking all the while he talks behind his oxen, who with vegetable made bones jerk him and his lumbering plow along in spite of every obstacle."
