From an evolutionary standpoint....
Hate could be beneficial/motivational for ensuring that your/your tribe's genes are passed on instead of mixing with other tribes....
Keeping other tribes away from your food supply...
Could also help in hunting and protection. It's much harder to kill animals/threats that you love.
Fury and vengeance kind of stem from hate, so no point addressing them individually.
And for (emotional) pain - helps us feel empathy for others (humans are social animals by necessity) and helps us avoid harmful situations.
just sayin'

I think hate is a byproduct of sin.............
example:
absence of God, produce all kind works of the flesh.
ex.
greed, produce, envy, produce, jealousy, sooooooooooooo...finally hate.

under the evolutionary example, how have things atrophied to where the instint to protect family, has made some actually hate who they were evolved to hate in order to protect. IE: fathers hating children, mothers also...

really????
Hate is a byproduct of ignorance. We fear what we do not know, we learn to hate what we fear. Jealousy, Rage, and Pain all stem from hate.

Just a biproduct. Evolution isn't always that specific.
Ie. we learned to hate without restrictions.

I know that...but "you disgust me" is different from "you disgust me and I will now punish you and your family"
the pronouncing of earthly judgment (GOD in v3: I have turned his (Esau's) mountains into a wasteland and gave his inheritance to jackals) proves a mechanism of His partial angst had been triggered.
If that is how you characterize his earthly judgment, on judgment day will He be "really really disgusted?"
also, Greek to Spanish is a tough translation, as is Greek to English. so neither of us have a true representation of the intention of the word...our best deduction is done by seeing the consequence of God's next actions

I tend to think that hate is more a result of a combination of xenophobia present in animals such as chimps and cultural divides that cause strife between groups of people.

because it's easy and convinient. What's that quote again..."it takes a few seconds to hate but a lifetime to love". Naturally not everyone has the patience to wait so long.

but it's an extreme emotion. If it were that easy or convenient, would we not see more hate?
are those that hate more than others, really just "less patient"?
I'm not flaming, just asking your opinion.

We all have some levels of hate within us. It can be something as benign as hating particular bad habits (i.e. picking your nose, being late, or keeping your place dirty etc) all the way to particular malevolent forms of hatred(i.e. extreme racism, prejudice, sexism, discrimination etc).
I would say it depends on your personality, back ground, history, mental makeup, family up bringing, social interaction etc. If you don't have enough experience in dealing with challenging issues and finding solutions, you become parochial in your views, you tend to blame others for your own problems, and the resulting confusion and irritation results in increasing hatred, fear, jealousy etc. If anything, hatred becomes a defense mechanism - it turns on and magnifies its presence to protect you from mental, physical, emotional confusion and depression.
Anything that you don't understand or challenges your mental paradigm...if you can't figure it out or deal with it, you want to escape from it. But if escape is not possible, then you start hating it.
just my opinion.

One of the fundamental ideas presented in this book is that anger is a "secondary emotion" used to mask a primary emotion. The author goes on to suggest that the primary emotion is often fear or uncertainty.
Any thoughts on this?
