The French are actually really nice people (serious)
I always hear people talking about how the French are rude and dislike Americans, but I went backpacking through Europe this summer and went along the French Riviera.
Anyways, everyone there was rather helpful and friendly. People literally came up to us to ask if we were Americans, and then they'd talk about how they love Americans and wish us the best.
Maybe it's because we didn't visit Paris, but I honestly think Obama is responsible.
Respect the serious tag

My dad loved the French too. They just hate the arrogent tourists. Like, there was a woman who was bitching about france on the subway...and acted amazed when someone told her to shut the hell up and go back home. Basically, he found that people didn't like or not Americans. They appreciated the fact that he knew different languages and asked about their cities. Just don't be the annoying American tourist who asks everything in English and acts privilaged.

Stay in Paris a couple days and you'll see how friendly they really are.

makes no difference if you're nice to them or not really, as soon as your back's turned they'll be flipping you the bird. only thing you can control is how they act to your face.

I don't speak any French; however, I was extremely respectful and friendly.

I really don't think so. In all honesty, I would think Obama is responsible.
The Germans were rather nice, aber ich spreche Deutsch

I am from UK, but working in France (Cote d'Azur) for the summer. Totally agree with all your comments.
Usually derogatory comments regarding other nations are based on heresay, a one off experience or 50 year old stereotypes.

I spend a lot of time in France, particularly Paris, and trust me, they're good at faking it. They have opened their minds a little with Obama, but the general outlook is still France > all.
And Germans are great people. My favourite Europeans

I spent two weeks in Paris with my family and everyone was extremely nice and helpful...even when my dad was doing things like asking a waiter "Can I just get a goddamned regular American coffee".
Encountered a couple of pickpockets on the subway but a guy leaned over and told us "don't turn your back to those pick pockets" and pointed them out to us.
My favorite part was the street musicians everywhere with like $1000s sitting in their guitar cases. Awesome city and I had a great time there.
(Myself and my bro speak french decently, that might have had something to do with our positive social encounters there)

Then why are French tourists #1 on the list of major asses? They are probably nice to your face so you spend money at their shops but the moment you leave they are mocking you.

This is definitely true. If you make an effort in trying to learn about their culture, they're all over you.

Pretty much goes for any foreign country you visit, at least try and speak their language, most of the time they will speak english with you after you make an attempt.

I think that a great deal of people who have a "rude" experience in another culture are just experiencing culture shock and the effects of not speaking the native language of the country they are in. If you spoke Spanish as a second language and encountered a lot of Mexican tourists, they might find you rude too.
When you visit another country you don't spend a long time in, you are in a new and relatively uncomfortable place, surrounded by people who are extremely comfortable with their surroundings. Just saying, its something to think about instead of just calling all Parisians or all French people rude.

I actually didn't buy anything there, really.
Lots of people saw us on the street and just were like "Are you guys Americans? Nice to have you here. OBAMA!"

Oh that explains it. We elected the biggest dumb ass socialist pig ever and they are proud we are going down their same path. I'd never set foot in France, ever.
