    Deadlift reps and max attempts

    I just did this tonight

    BB Deadlifts
    set 1 135lbs 8 reps
    set 2 225lbs 5 reps
    set 3 315lbs 3 reps
    set 4 365lbs 3 reps
    set 5 385lbs 1 reps
    set 6 405lbs 0 failed mid shins
    set 7 395lbs 1 reps *PR
    set 8 315lbs 5 reps

I really could not make a good pull on the 405 so I just went down, last week I hit my pr of 385, this week 395, my question is do you think i am doing too many reps/sets before trying a PR? I am still real new to deadlifting in general so trying to figure out what I should be doing.

Yes, too many reps. I recently worked up to a 430 deadlift by doing this:

General warmup stuff (leg swings, stretching, a few reps with the bar)
    2 * 3 * 135
    1 * 185
    1 * 225
    1 * 275
    1 * 315
    1 * 365
    1 * 405
    1 * 430

I would have jumped from 365 to 405.

Warm up as much as you want at 135, but go up with singles and take the biggest jumps you are comfortable with.

There is a difference whether you want to just hit a PR that day, or train the muscle groups (not mutually exclusive), but where you are PRing, you aren't going to hit as many sets or reps.

A regular DL training day for us will look something like this

135 x 8 just to get the blood flowing
    225 x 3
    315 x 3
    405 x 2
    465 x 1
    500 x 1
then increments of 10 lbs until there we fail. If its not a PR day, we do a drop off set for reps, usually 405 or 365.

(Im not a numbers person, the only reason I put numbers in there is to show the increments.)

Also, we did a cycle of 5/3/1 and it worked great, less sets, more reps at the finish on most days.
