2 Young Men Beaten Unconscious

These punks actually attacked from behind and beat while unconscious. We are pushing for a felony charge with the DA. Can you believe the misdemeanor charge? Dont you love our justice system in NC? And the attackers names are in the article. They are on myspace and facebook in Wilmington. I wonder if they get emails from people who actually looked them up!

I need your hearts on this one. My brother went out for his birthday last week. His 22 birthday. If you knew him, you would realize my highly spoken words of him are not enough. He is a UNCW graduate and now a teacher. The kindest, biggest hearted of my 5 brothers. He has never hurt a soul, never speaks negatively about anyone, has more trust than a human should? As I was saying, he went out for his birthday. After the bar was closing, he and his roommate were leaving. Before they made it 10 steps, they were both knocked unconscious by 3 young men. While unconscious, they were severely beaten and left to die while still unconscious and losing large amounts of blood. Their attackers walked away (slowly, no running or panicking), bragging about it, believing they were dead. In the ER, Chaz awoke 10 hours later. The trauma center spoke of the fact that one more kick would have pushed the already broken orbital and cheek bones into Chaz?s brain and killed him instantly. His first hour in ER, they believed he was NOT going to make it. They used every technician on duty and every piece of equipment they had. I'm not as sure about the roommate, but he has cerebral damage and internal damage. Chaz has to see several plastic surgeons, orthodontists, dentists, doctors.. You name it. After his first day, he already had another scary trip to ER because of his wounds. If you saw his wounds, you would be shocked. His eye is cut so badly, you can see his eye ball through his actual eyelid, numerous facial bones broken, jaw and teeth obstruction. The list goes on? Chaz is stuck with these bills. The attackers are known to be unemployed. He has already exhausted his own funds and is not able to return to his job. My parents have sold and used everything they own. Now I'm asking for all of your help. Even 5 dollars will go so far when from each of you. I KNOW I have some good friends and some good people. We can do this. Please. This is in the paper and will be going much further. The paper said they have never seen so many people come together for this. It has caused such an outbreak that Wilmington probably isn?t too happy about it for tourist and political reasons. I'm going to bump this for you because I had a friend who recently died (last week) after he got jumped in Bakersfield by 3 Cal State wrestlers for defending a woman outside a bar

Sorry, that was converted quickly from my phone. However, I was not worried about my paragraph formation at the time of sending.

Wilmington | For more than a week, Chaz Housand has wondered what exactly happened to him early on the morning of July 17 when he and a friend were attacked downtown.

He wonders whether the beating, in which he and Chet Saunders were knocked unconscious, took seconds or several minutes. Since it happened on Front Street on a Friday morning, Housand said he wonders who witnessed the beating and whether anyone intervened.

And while he suspects they were attacked because he and Saunders are gay, he doesn’t remember the incident and so can’t be certain.

“The last thing I remember, I was walking out the door” of a bar, said Housand, 22, of Rocky Point. “Then I remember waking up in the hospital.”

Police also say they don’t know the reason behind the attack.

While neither Housand nor Saunders, a 22-year-old from Wilmington, know exactly what happened, both said they can think of no reason someone would attack them, other than because of their sexual orientation.
The case

Just after 2 a.m. on July 17, witnesses flagged down an officer and said two young men had been beaten.

The two victims were lying on a curb in the 100 block of Front Street and were taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. According to the incident report, a witness told police a suspect said, “This is our town,” during the beating.

Within an about an hour, authorities had a description of the suspects and an address where they might be. Later that morning, police arrested three men at a home on Dapple Court. One of the suspects had blood on his shoe, police have said. Those charged are: Melvin Freanthony Spicer, 25; Daniel Minwoo Lee, 21; and Jong Tae Chung, 27. All are from Wilmington.

Both victims say they never saw their attackers and don’t know the defendants.

Saunders said he has only scattered memories of the night they went out to celebrate Housand’s birthday.

Housand said they had been at a bar and at one point he danced with a friend who is a man.

Detective A.C. Swenson said he doesn’t know what motivated the attack. He also said police often investigate assaults downtown in the early morning hours.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re gay or straight, or black or white,” he said. “At 2 a.m., when people are getting out of the bars, that is the most volatile time to be downtown.”

In a prior interview regarding this case, New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David said North Carolina law regarding hate crimes does not cover attacks motivated by a victim’s sexual orientation.

But when sentencing, judges may consider all the circumstances surrounding an attack, David said.

Swenson said he will raise the defendants’ assault charges from misdemeanors to felonies because of how seriously the victims were hurt.

Both Housand and Saunders say they were in the hospital for hours following the attack, and they continue to consult doctors for their injuries.

Housand said he has broken bones in his face as well as stitches above his eye and around his mouth.

Saunders said he has a concussion and internal bruising. His injuries affect his motor skills, he said, including his ability to work a knife and fork.

Housand, a recent University of North Carolina Wilmington graduate, said while in college he was involved in clubs which lobbied to change North Carolina’s hate crimes law. But he said he never imagined the issue would affect him directly.

Saunders said the incident has made him reluctant to return downtown at night. “I don’t feel like it’s a safe place,” he said. “I never really expected something like this to happen.”

Thank you guys and thank you for bumping. You have no idea how much it means. im surprised Wilmington even let this get this far. Police try to keep it hidden but the papers got so much response about not being in the paper, they did and they got so much follow up.... same with DA.

My sister goes to school down in NC - ECU.

We went out to the town on a sat night ...damn that place is grimey, and I live in a northeast metro area....definitely did not seem safe at all. A lot of scumbags out and about in large groups

Chaz and Chet are having such a hard time with nasty people and the media. And my older brother couldnt hold back. He actually emailed Jong on myspace and just said 'how was jail'

wow. and i suppose for sure by now, they know they are going back for felony charges.
chaz went to the oral surgeon yesterday. it is so expensive. poor guy. and he is one of those that had a credit card at 16 and never depended on anyone. worked since he was 15 and made his way on his own. not a mooch. its such a shame.
im trying so hard to spread the site. if anyone could help, i would be forever grateful.

no im pretty sure outside of that. i think they both live in their house on dapple court.
its so sad. chaz was just out for his birthday, enjoying the fact that he had a great job and just finished his 4 year degree.
and ill tell you, they werent being loud mouth kids either. and as soon as they walked out. bam. within one kick of killing him. one kick. and hes off driving around in his little white s2000. i really wonder what sentencing they will get.

yeah. typical bar fights imo. Every so often, someone will die, for whatever reason. I don't find this one out of the norm. Lest you forget the two murders that happened on the other side of philly that happened on the same night (quite a bit different imo)
