I hated whey shakes when I first started, but that's because I was being cheap and buying inexpensive brands (ON included... I reeeeeeaallly don't like ON's chocolate).
I knew that the whey shakes were necessary for my goals though, so throughout a few months, I went on a quest to find the best tasting brands.
My favorites:
- Cytosport's Muscle Milk - Strawberry Creme
- VPX - Chocolate and Vanilla, but basically I haven't found a VPX shake I didn't like
- Dymatize - Chocolate and Vanilla
I have not tried ON's vanilla so I can't comment on that... after my experience with their chocolate I didn't even want to look at that brand again./

Some people just can't tolerate whey (the taste, bloating, stomach cramps, etc.). You don't have to have protein shakes in your diet...hell, you don't even have to have 800 grams of protein in your diet(j/k). Use whole foods and experiment to find an approximation of how much protein you need to grow. Some metabolisms don't need that much protein at all to see results. I'm an endo-meso and honestly could grow muscle with just 150g protein per day.

I can down as many whey protein shakes as I want. And I am going to start adding many oatmeal/whey shakes to my diet also(have had those before and those also work for me). I can pretty much down anything that deals with building muscles without hesitation. It is so easy for me to use my weight lifting knowledge to override my taste buds whenever I choose.

Whey isn't always the most pleasant thing for me to drink. I'd gotten to the bottom of a two gallon tub of ON 100% Whey, the vanilla ice cream flavor. I liked it a lot for a long time, but an experience a week ago ruined it for some reason.
My college has really hard water, lots of iron and you can taste it. The smell resonantes in things the water has been in, no matter how long you keep washing it. In any case, I put a scoop of whey in a water bottle and grabbed two little cartons of skim milk because I was in a hurry. I mixed it together at work and it had this awful after taste.
Since then, my whey hasn't been tasting so good. I bought the chocolate kind but I'm not so fond of it. I can't will myself to finish off the vanilla for some reason. Whey is integral to my diet here at college, so I just down it anyways.Bench press - 175x4 (200)

These people that think that whey is disgusting confuse the crap out of me. It think it's delicious (even with just water)...one of the better tasting things that I consume. I know I have sensitive taste buds (I recently did the little paper strip test: and it tasted bitter; according to my nutrition professor, only about 15% of men are able to detect the bitter taste) and I still think they taste good. It might not be a chocolate milkshake or an Oreo Blizzard from dairy queen, but they still taste good. ON ftw.

Hmm... This is contradictory, unless you're statement is really, "There's no really good tasting protein", in which case you'd be well... wrong. Did you ever think that there may be a reason why ON is so affordable? Sure, some of the price of other brands is in the branding (had to throw in the marketing terminology), but another reason is the effort the companies go to in order to provide the best ingredients and taste.
Try other more expensive brands. IMO they all taste better than ON, especially VPX. As often as most of us drink protein, there's really no reason to settle for 'drinkable' taste (unless you're strapped for cash). I kept searching until I found brands and flavors that get me excited to drink my shakes. Now that I have, it's not a chore, it's a treat!Last edited by eyesonly; 01-23-2007 at 02:38 PM.

my first ever whey protein shake was GNC's chocolate...i actually really liked it..then i went and ordered a 10 pound bag of ON's chocolate...liked that too...then i went with a 5 pound tub of ON's vanilla "ice cream" flavor...and upon smelling it, i was in heaven...it smelled sooo amazing and i mixed it with some milk and almost puked after my first sip...that ****s nasty...so i finished up that tub and stuck with chocolate for awhile and recently got strawberry...nasty (to me)...i guess i really only have a taste for chocolate whey but then again i guess everyone has their own flavor preferences...you just gotta find what works for you

quite honestly i look forward so much to my protein shake, especially when i have it in the morning. i throw in the ON 100% gold standard chocolate w/ vanilla soy milk, a frozen banana, a few cubes of ice and sometimes a little bit of coffee

I find most vanilla flovored protein drinks to be gross. However I think Muscle Milk does the best as far as taste though.
One recipe I can recommend to anyone who doesn't like the flavor of their protein and isn't worried about calories. In my case it was Cytogainer Rocky Road.
Take the recommended serving size and put in blender(for wg's use 1 less scoop)
Add 2 tbs creamy peanut butter (honey flavored pb is even better)
1/2-1 Banana
2-3 Chunky Chips ahoy cookies
14-16 oz of fat free milk
3-4 ice cubes
MMM sooooo good
