If your goal is to build maximum mass and strength, I'd say yes, deadlifts are necessary.
No brain, no gain.

dont know if it's just coincidence, but when i started squatting and DLing, all my lifts went up, and i started to pack on some serious poundage.
PS, during june july n' august, i have to do all my core lifts on a smith machine, the gym i use for those months only has a smith machine, no bars. Only preloaded barbells.------------------

I disagree. Every person at my gym except 3(including me) has horrible form and they don't hurt themselves! They do, however, lift at least 100 lbs. more than I do. I don't care though, i'm not trying to build or break my spine, trying to build my back, legs, traps, and core.
Trust me, learn how to do them properly. It is worth it, no matter how much you end up DL'ing. If it's heavy for you, you'll grow."Ignorance is the most expensive commodity we pay for in this country."

No, they are not necessary.
The guy with the biggest back I've ever seen was against deadlifting. It shocked me at the time, but now I realize that there isnt really one move thats absolutely NECESSARY to do to build any body part. People get too caught up in being hardcore, and having to deadlift and having to squat, when the truth is neither of those are absolutely necessary to do.
For example; Dorian Yates did not squat, and he still built some of the greatest legs ever.
Just do what you like to do...

When i first started deadlifting i learned proper form the hardway by really hurting my lower back, it hurt to walk for almost a month and i could not even walk around or keep a straight back. Even with that happening i still would never stop doing deadlifts, they are my favorite exercise and im up to 320x5x3 and i hurt myself in the 100's lol. Best advice to not hurt yourself like i did is to keep the bar close to your body and vision yourself pushing your feet through the floor, use them legs.
