OT: Since women are fashion conscious in the gym, here's a tip from the guys.....
This has been bothering me a lot over maybe the past year. I thought it was just me that the issue bothered until I brought up up to a couple people at the gym who agreed with me. I felt even better knowing I wasn't just crazy after a few people managed to bring up their own personal disdain for it to me on their own. It seems like it's a universal no no for girls in the gym, yet it continues to happen (typically amongst the college crowd), because girls usually get no feedback on their attire from the opposite sex to their faces I'm guessing. They see other girls continuing to do it and they think that it must be sexy or something. But little do they know...So here I am to try and plant a seed so that women can understand that a certain little fad they're partaking in is making pretty much every dude cringe. The culprit?
Black mid calf socks.
I don't know if this is supposed to be some "lol irony!" fashion to make you look like a 90 year old man, but for the love of (your god's name here) you all need to stop. If you're trying to look good in the gym as pretty much every woman out there does indeed try to do (I'm asusming this because usually people go to the gym to workout to look better, so i can't imagine going there intentionally trying to make yourself look worse), allow me to use a traditional "lolcat" caption and say "ur doin it rong."
Black socks do not look good on any woman, period, especially with white chunky cross trainers. You all need to realize that doing this is the equivalent of the dudes coming to the gym wearing brown sandals with black socks up their own mid calf in a sad attempt at creating the 90 year old man ironic fashion statement. I'm not gay in the least but even seeing guys wear that crap makes me want to wretch. I've seen that style on the guys on a decline however but the girls seem to be going full force, so i figure I should do America a favor and speak up..
I hope this post isn't misconstrued as trying to start trouble, I'm seriously coming here so that those who do dress their feet up in this horrible manner would hear the guy's side of the story and realize that no matter how hard you try and shove this fashion out there and down our throats, it's not going to work. Nothing will ever make us think anything else than a 90 year old man when we look at your lower body when you wear that stuff. Now if you're attempting to do this to keep guys away from you at the gym, way to go, it's working. But if you seriously think you look good doing it, please think again.
Please spread the word amongst the female communities out there online and to your own friends and families.

I haven't seen this trend at my gym, but I'm usually so focused on my workouts that I don't pay a lot of attention to how other people dress. I'll admit that if I saw a woman wearing calf-high socks of any color, I might look twice, but it wouldn't bother me so much that I'd come home and start a thread about it.
Not all of us worry that much about what we wear in the gym. I can't speak for other women, obviously, but I work out so I'll look good in the clothes I wear outside of the gym. I roll out of bed at 5:25am so I can be at the gym at 6:00 or a little before, and at that hour, the last thing on my mind is looking good for the men.
If you're offended by what a woman wears when she's working out, focus harder on your own workouts so you won't have to look at her. Seems simple enough to me.

You're missing the point.
Anyone with an iota of self esteem is fashion conscious. The reason fashion exists to begin with has and always will be for social status, protection from the elements, and finding a mate. Taking those 3 reasons into account, two of them fit into a gym setting. Any time you put something on your body and you know you're going to be around people -- especially people at a gym who 9 times out of ten are there to make themselves look better, meaning they are self aware of their appearance -- , you make a conscious choice: "Will this look good on me?" If you think it does, you wear it.
With that in mind, I must re assert my reasoning for posting this. It's to let women know that they are indeed making the wrong choice when they ask themselves if this will look good on them, despite your trying to put an alternate spin on it and arguing I should not look at nor notice anyone at the gym and never have an opinion on what I see.

I don't give a damn about social status and I already have a mate.
However, I don't wear black socks with anything but black slacks.

So would you have any problems with wearing a shirt with food stains, or your shoes caked in mud? What if you had a bad case of dandruff and it was everywhere, would you wash your hair before you went?
if so then you are fashion conscious to a degree when it comes to presenting yourself in the gym, like it or not.
If you really wouldn't care about looking like a complete hobo, then congratulations, you are the exceptional tiny minority to the general rule.

Way to go on bringing up an image semi related but in the completely wrong context and in an outfit completely designed for anything other than the gym or general sports related activities. I applaud your attempt to misconstrue the image I was trying to convey to the masses so that you can paint me as a complete moron that doesn't know what he's talking about because you're angry for some reason, but I don't think it worked.

I'm a pl/sm/cyclist.. I quite often walk around covered in mud, rust,chalk,sweat.. and yeah sometimes I food stains. It's also common for me to have holes ripped in my clothes and tacky all over me!
The point is my self esteem is not wrapped up in what I look all the time but in what I'm accomplishing!! So you don't like what they are wearing big deal!! Maybe they do!!

Personally, I probably would have a slight judgmental reaction to those socks at the gym too.
HOWEVER, (and a BIG however), I also personally think that feeling confident while working out will often have a positive contribution towards the actual workout. If a girl feels stylish or hot or extra confident in ANY sense due to wearing certain apparel, then hell yeah she should wear it. That goes for guys too. If you feel extra good about yourself while working out, then more will go into the workout. Plus, there'd be less of a chance of feeling self-conscious, which would take away from the workout.
(WARNING: TANGENT/RANT) This same thing goes for wearing make-up to workouts. I CAN'T STAND when people criticize girls for having even just a minimal splash of make-up on when going for a run or to the gym or whatever. If she's used to always wearing make-up in front of others, then she'd obviously feel very insecure without it during a workout. That insecurity would take away from the workout.

LOL. Awesome.
Yeah I'm not a fan of those mid-calf socks. They make me giggle though.

YAY, I love you!
I wont walk out of my house without mascara at the very least. I dont wear a whole lot of makeup to begin with, but my one little crazy OCD is having to have mascara. I've gotten so used to seeing myself with it, I feel weird without it, looking in a mirror is like seeing a stranger. Completely silly I know, but it definitely bothers me.
For the OP... I've never noticed anyone in black socks? I have noticed precisely-ripped cut-offs that never get sweaty becoming a bigger fashion statement though.

Negged.
It's absurd to suggest that being clean is a fashion trend.

personally..
i dont try to look fashionable at the gym. i wear what ever is comfortable to work out in.. which usually consists of underarmor or rebok gym shorts and a tank top.
wearing socks up to my midcalf just doesnt seem that practical.. black or any other color. its always ankle socks and running shoes for me.
also, i dont even notice other people when i work out, let alone their socks.
and i definately dont care what guys think i look like at the gym, im not looking to meet anyone there
but its nice that youre so concerned, its clear that youre just trying to do women that go to the gym a favor by letting them know what you think (i dont mean that in a sarcastic or rude way)

I like this! Of all the reasons I work out, and there are several, impressing some overly concerned dude at the gym is NOT one of them.
Frankly, I often go to the gym straight from riding my horses. My shoes are occasionally muddy (though I try to knock that off so I don't get mud in the gym) my shirts are often covered with sweat, horse hair, dirt and horse drool/snot. If I haven't seen my boyfriend in a few days, I probably haven't shaved so I'm stubbly. But guys still check me out on occasion and I find it annoying.
Apparently all I have to do is put on black socks and they'll leave me alone!! Yay! Thanks dude.

LOL!
I've actually never seen this. Must be a regional thing.
I just wear a normal tight-fitting t-shirt or tank and short shorts. I wear my tightest shorts on leg day and make sure whatever I wear on chest day is sleeveless and low cut. I like seeing my muscles contract and enjoy watching my upper body veins pop.
If I am doing strictly cardio, however, I will wear loose, comfortable clothing, stick the headphones in my ears, and give off the biggest "leave me the #$* alone!" vibe.
The other ladies at my gym aren't as narcissistic as I am, I suppose, because they all wear baggy t-shirts with loose-fitting shorts or pants.

I don't care about people's gym attire ... it's not a fashion show, social event, or status symbol. I don't go to the gym to look pretty, I go to work out.
If people are bothered by what I'm wearing, they're obviously not working out hard enough ... maybe they should save gas and stay at home watching "E!" or whatever you watch to play fashion police.
LoLz
edit: I'm not a black sock person, but who cares?

Who gives a crap about black socks? You came in here just to rant for 3 paragraphs about that?
Men . . . oy.

I have to agree with the other women. Who the hell cares what anyone wears to the gym? I have better things to do with my time at the gym than to sit around and critique other's outfits. Most of the time I am not even aware that there are other people at the gym with me.

Gayest thread ever. OP, step away from the closet. It's time to come out. Maybe if you stopped worrying about what everybody was wearing in the gym you might get up to a normal weight.

are black ankle socks ok?
I really wouldn't want to make a fashion faux pas.
