How to measure rice when cooked!?!?

I just have a problem which i hope some1 can solve. The thing is, the quantity of rice uncooked is easy to measure out and stuff so you can know how much your eating. However when it becomes cooked it's a whole different matter. Because depending on how much water you add, how long you cook it for, the same amount of rice uncooked can come out to be a variety of weights when cooked. Now it's ok if you are eating/cooking by yourself, so you just measure out the uncooked rice and then add water and so you don't need to worry about how much it weighs cooked. However the thing is my parents would cook rice for the whole family at dinner and so it ends up with different amounts of water each time. So i just generally fudge it and just have a bowl give or take. I was just wondering if there was any more accurate way of gauging how much rice i was actually getting then.

    Cook your own rice up.

Easy to do so -->> Know how much you cook (eg: 200g raw weight). Know macro's of this. Weigh it once it is cooked (eg: 500g cooked rice). Serve yourself out into appropriate serves for each meal (eg: 125g cooked rice).

    Using above example:
    500g cooked rice = 4 serves of 125g COOKED
You cooked up 200g raw = 4 serves of 50g RAW

So to get the macro's for 125g cooked you simply use what 50g raw would be.

Or, you know, you could simply guestimate it.

Thanks, but it's difficult when my parents just cook it all together in one go. They'd be really annoyed if i did it separately. They don't really like me trying to bulk up or get into bodybuilding or anything.

one serving of uncooked rice is a half cup, one serving of cooked rice is supposed to be 1 cup, says so right on the box..even if you dont cook it yourself you can probably check out the box right?

I'm not talking about that. I'm saying my parents will just cook X amount of rice in a rice cooker. And so fo dinner i just go scoop out X amount for myself. The thing is i have no idea how much i'm getting because even if i did know the original amount they used for example 3 cups or something, i'm not going to weigh all the rice that was cooked to divide that in 3 in order to eat the equivalent of 1 cup of uncooked rice. Do you get what i'm saying??

i get what your saying now..

i dont think that the amount that they cooked matters, as long as you get how much you want..for instance, like i said before, if you want the equivalent to one cup uncooked then it should be around 2 cups cooked. it should approximately double in size so you dont really have to weigh it, measuring it should work just fine for things like rice

As i said though, it's difficult to say, because the amount of water u add causes the rice to weigh more/less, fluff up more/less

Ask your mother how much rice she cooked. If DADDY TAKES 1/3 AND MOMMY TAKES 1/3 AND YOU GET THE REST THEN DIVIDE THE AMOUNT COOKED BY 3 AND YOU WILL HAVE YOUR CALORIES.

Dude, you are really straining out the gnat and gulping the camel.

The couple ounces of water difference per batch is not a big deal.

just like everyone else has said, its not really going to make that much difference..the rice can only absorb so much water so i guess the only thing that would make a difference is if it didnt have enough water, and if they are steaming a big batch then it probably has plenty of water. go with it doubling in size, even if its not quite exact it will be a pretty negligible difference

i have a similar problem. I'm indian so we eat rice a lot too, Its really hard to estimate the serving size of cooked rice to uncooked but from what i learned with keeping a chart is theres only a .10 percent difference. Unless your cutting and how much carbs you eat matter, keep a chart and estimate how much your taking in.

I just started training with a trainer and he told me to measure out 80g of cooked rice on a food scale and that is equal to 25, 26 grams of carbs. He's been doing this for years and really know his stuff. Hope that helps!

I have similar problem. I am Chinese so sorry about poor English. We grow and pick our own rice and I cannot find nutrious facts about this type of rice. Is it more calorie and carb or less than rice that is bought in store? Also I come to America and notice rice is more fluffy like the OP say, my rice in China is not as fluffy - it is more firm I think because of the water is not as pure. This means it is heavier so 200g of raw rice is now 600g of cook rice - if I eat it (and we like eating rice alot), and American eat his rice that is only 500g of cook rice, will I gain more weight than him?

Last, my mom cook a lot, and cooks a lot of rice, and she puts other stuff in it, is there a good way to figure out how much the other stuff like vegetables, weigh in the fried rice she makes? Sometimes its hard to figure out the calories of her rice. This is also same situation, is raw vegetable same as cooked vegetable? Does it matter what oil she use - I think it is either vegetable oil or olive oil?

I am trying to monitor my carb in take, some people say not to eat the rice - so maybe I will need to not eat Chinese food anymore and just do the vegetables? Any suggestion would be very helpful! THanks!

Do you get what i'm saying??
I just weigh all the rice one it was cooked and divide it by the servings I aimed for. So if I cooked up 200 grams of carbs worth of rice total, I would just weigh the rice once it's done and divide that number by 4 for 4 50 gram meals. It sounds like a pain in the ass, but if you just weigh the rice cooker removable container before you ever use it, you can just take it out and set that on the scale once your rice is done, subtract container weight and divide the remainder by X amount of meals. Probably sounds more complicated than it actually is.

I just have little measuring cups with 1/2 cup 1/3 cup 2/3 cups 3/4 cup, 1 cup and scoop it with that and it works fine.'

Grab the 1/2 cup, fill it up, put it on plate. There's 1/2 cups of rice and my macros.
