I'm a dark skinned girl. My contest is on August 1st. I have not done any tanning. Should I just apply tanning spray at the competition or should I do some kind of tanning prior? I know about the benefit of "drying out" from tanning, but beyond that is it necessary that I tan? I also know nothing about tanning products. I don't know what products are lotions or actual artificial tans.

1) Tanning doesn't "dry you out" - whoever told you that is full of it. You might get some enhanced vascularity for a very short period of time immediately following the tan, but that's it.
2) Even if you have dark skin, you can benefit from competition color products like Dream Tan (I like #2) especially since those products have a nice sheen built into them. All of my darker skin clients use Dream Tan #2. You can always tell from the audience which darker skinned people thought they didn't need color Dont put it all that hard work and miss these little details - they do matter!
