I disagree. This forum uses "beast" in a positive way but for most people to say someone is "beastly" implies that they are less than human. "Beast" in this quote would therefore have a negative connotation, while to be a MAN is a good thing and always has been in any culture or society. To be a man is to deal with the human condition (emotion, empathy, uncertainty) in daily life and never to bow. To be a beast is to remove yourself from it, but while you eliminate the negative aspects of humanity you also eliminate the positive (compassion, true bravery, love and friendship, honor etc)
Being a man is painful, but preferable to being a beast - see what I mean? I read it as making yourself a beast being a cop-out. A sign of weakness, in a way.
Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

The very essence of the quote is about alienating oneself from the piteous traits of the mortal man. It's essentially ejecting yourself from humanity(much like Rich Piana's superhuman concept ) - ''leaving humanity behind''.
As mentioned above, in becoming a beast, you remove these arguably hindering qualities of man and let your true potential go unscathed. You give into being impulsive, animalistic blah blah blah. Alot of this is from my interpretation of Lennie from OfMiceAndMen(school work.)
Pretty weird outlook on life though.
Weird philosophy too. Can't be a healthy outlook.

The quote is a coming of age piece, like the "so your driving in a hurricane" riddle..
Becoming a man turns your body into a beast; a man has a methodical approach to pain and puts his family above himself. But a true man loves to cry for it reminds him that he is still human, and can still feel.
Numbing yourself from everything kills your soul and makes you like an animal, a lesser being.
If you read where it comes from, Anecdotes of the Revd. Percival Stockdale, you'd see that Johnson really did mean it in the numbing sense.. but back then being a man, a real man, was more important than pain; so it was certainly a cop out in all likelihood.
Also it was quoted by Dr. Seuss long before Fear and Loathing..and Wayy before Bat Country...both of which use it in accordance with drugs, darkness, and being numb as opposed to the integrity distilled from my initial description.
Also..you can never over think things..you either think them through or you don't.. You can think so much you put yourself in a corner, but let's be honest, most people these days don't think nearly enough.March 23: 315

RIP in peace, Rev.READ THIS: You know how your Visa gift cards usually end up with $0.63 left on them, so then you carry them around for months before you eventually just throw them away? Well, Tarck's here to tell you that most charities have a PayPal link on their website where you can quickly donate that balance (even if you don't have a PayPal account). It only takes a moment and it beats literally throwing money away. Thanks for your time; we now return to your regularly scheduled cuckold and FA threads.
