The definitely don't work for everyone (like many exercises) but I would consider them the starting point.
Lat width is largely a product of shoulder blade flexibility. One can have big lats and a poor lat spread, or poor lats and a good spread.
Ever tried pullovers? These work well for some people for lat width.CSCS, ACSM cPT.
