Anyone want to argue a warmup isnt needed?

If your one of those guys headed straight for the weight room to pump that iron before a 5-10 warmup, im just curious as to why?

I never used to warmup, until i got halfway through the starting strength routine.
Working with high weight without warming up is asking for injury.

I rather waste time warming up than have to waste weeks for the muscle to repair from the injury.

I find incorporating a warm-up into my routine, not only warms up my muscles on whats to come, but it also seems to help me add on a few pounds on my weights. Aside from the obvious helps prevent injury.

On my first and usually my second exercise I do a warm up set of about 14 reps. I also warm up on the elliptical for 10mins before training as its currently winter here..........

Bench, squats, deads are the only exercises I warm up with, and thats only if Im doing downward ramping sets (starting with max first, then dropping weight and adding reps on subsequent sets). If Im doing a standard ramp, then I wont bother with an actual warmup set.

I don't train like most people here.... Usually total body or upper/lower splits. Lots of squats, pulls, and presses. Very little isolation BB type work. I like to train heavy and stay injury free. The two don't usually go together. I go through a thorough warm up every training session.

    Typical Warm Up

    5 minutes on the Bike
    25-30 shoulder dislocates
    25-30 trunk twists
    25-30 second hang for time
    10-15 hanging twists
    10-15 forward leg swings x2
    10-15 side leg swings x2
    Squat stretch x a lot

The above warm up takes less than 15 minutes and I am usually sweating and ready to go by the end. I also use my foam roller daily and I do a lot of static stretches on cardio/conditioning days.

I don't do full body warm ups. It's counter productive for what i am trying to achieve in the gym.

I warm up a specific motion for several sets in the rep range that i will be working in. Doing higher reps and cardio perpare the CNS for something much different than is coming.

I'll do a light weight for my first rep, but forget stretching. You do lose some strength from it, and as long as you dont jump right into heavy sets I dont see the problem.

Reading Joe Weiders Bodybuilding book, stretching of course is something important, but from the looks of it, it is something that should be done on off-days/at night.

You actually want to stretch when your muscles are warmed up and your blood is pumping...

take southern lord for example, does a lil cardio before all the stretching

I don't do any cardio to warm up.

I just do 2-3 min dynamic stretching, then light rotator cuff warmup plus dips/chins if I'm doing upper or glute activation/front squats with bar if I'm doing lower.

    Warm up critical

I agree. Years back, I use to jump right into my sets and it caught up really fast in the form of injuries. Now I always use a minimum of two warm-up sets, then jump into my heavier sets. Definitely looking for trouble should you decide to jump right in with a (ex.) 280lb bench press and failed to warm up with some lighter sets. = imo, it is an inevitable disaster.

Working with high weight without warming up is asking for injury.

I rather waste time warming up than have to waste weeks for the muscle to repair from the injury.

If it's legs I'll do 5 mins of cardio.

if any other day, I don't feel the need to do 5 minutes of cardio, when it won't benefit my lifts. I'll warm up my rotator cuffs, and I'll ramp up weights with warm up sets before my working sets. But I don't see how 5-10 minutes on a treadmill is going to warm up my chest for the bench press.

I don't ride the bike that often before working out any more, but I still do warmups in the sense that I do light weight to start and get the blood flowing and loosen up the joints and tendons.

I always start with 50 - 100 Jumping Jacks to get all the limbs working and blood flowing regardless of what the workout day is.

I then tend to do arm / shoulder rotations - dislocations holding a 5 lbs weight to stretch those on Chest / Tris Days
Back and Bi days I Usually grab the Chinup bar and hang for 30 secsm then twist for 20 secs
I then grab my toes and stretch out my back. When I do deads I typically do 1 set of 10 when I got 1 plate on before I go into my working set, After that before each set I practice my form and "make believe / go through the motion of the lift"

For legs and shoulder day I typically do standard legs stretches for 2 minutes, bending knees, etc.. my stretches take maybe 5 minutes not even.....

I should really do more then that but who the **** has the time.
