Listen to your doctor. If you feel 6 weeks is too early, wait longer.

The best advice is from your doctor. Can I ask what kind of open heart surgery since you're only 16?

just dont bench. you dont want your heart launching out, hitting the ceiling, and landing on your face to be that last thing you ever see

The heart is a muscle, not cartilage. It probably depends on the surgery, but why do you feel anyone on an internet message board is more qualified to answer this than your doctor?
Listen to your doctor. If you feel 6 weeks is too early, talk to your doctor and convey your concerns.Ongoing Journal: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=106420991

This is a question for your Dr. not the internet.
Being a real lifter is not about a number, or a medal, or somebody else telling you that you are a real lifter. It is about commitment to the iron and strength of purpose.

I think the kid is just scared and wants/needs some reassurance.

The answer is, "when you and your doctor say you are ready". When I had my heart problems it took me awhile to get back on the horse because I had built a lot of what if scenarios up in my mind that made me afraid. Once I realized that I was not going to die if I did certain things all that went away. It will do the same for you.
