Just ordered a punching bag, and about to order some gloves, for working out. I also want to learn self defense, plus just have fun.
My right wrist has been f*cked up since an injury 13 years ago. I have tendinitis (not carpal tunnel) as a result. It is somewhat weak (though my dominant hand,) and can get stiff/sore. It needs to be popped back into place frequently.
Anything special I need to do that might help prevent me from making matters worse? Thanks for any help.

you should be able to punch a brick wall if your hand is wrapped properly and not suffer any ill effects. search google for "boxing hand wraps" or something, therell be hundreds of videos.
dont be bitchin about somebody not being a mexican while ignoring someone who isnt irish.
i have to say i have a minor obsession with hand wraps, i just find it fun wrapping my hands up and trying different methods. Only thing that puts me off is rolling them up after.........

yeah. thing is, i spent most of my time learning how to kick someone in the face, not really making my wraps look pretty.
besides which, the guy i instruct for trains pro boxers too, he never really does it with the open palms stuff either.
didn't mean to say the last post as offensive if you took it that way, idk its the internet its hard to tell.
I'm surprised the pro boxers weren't wrapping it this way. Even in amateur matches our handwraps (using gauge and tape or handwraps as is) they check it to make sure we have an open palm

oh, dont worry, no offence was taken. ive never had any problems with my hands so far. even when ive had my hands wrapped with other people, i actually feel more comfortable with a completley wrapped hand...its odd, i think half of it is just habit, also, the way i throw a punch is odd too, i dont really clench the fist too hard on impact either...not that i tell newbies to do it my way.

ya fully wrapped it feels like punches can be thrown a lot harder, for the most part they check for an open palm is because people can easily over wrap the inside palm to create a holding a stack of nickels effect.

Do a lot of you guys bind the 3rd knuckle? I learned how to wrap my hands ages ago so I cant say I have ever watched a youtube video on it. But doesn't binding your 3rd knuckle kinda put pressure on the already weak part of your hand?

wrapping should never really put pressur eon your hands, it should support them. try flexing and relaxing your hand as you wrap, it helps you find the right tension.

take it slowly at first, just to see how it feels
i know when i started muay thai i found my wrists were weak (i'm a really skinny mofo with tiny wrists) but the strength builds up.
That's how I've always wrapped my hands with grappling gloves , gives you a bit extra on the knuckles . Just remember you aren't trying to build a cast over you're hand , the warp acts more like a shock absorber .
