Franco Columbu Strongest Man who Ever Lived?

Anyone agree this guy could deadlift 785lbs for reps at a bodyweight og 190 lbs

coleman can only lift 800lbs at s bodyweight of 290lbs+

i think he would give mariuz a good challenge!

    Francos Best Lifts:

    Powerlifting Best Lifts
    Bench press 525 Lbs / 238,35 kg
    Squat (exercise) 665 Lbs / 301,91 kg
Deadlift 750 Lbs / 340,5 kg (in some training sessions, he was reported to have lifted over 780 Lbs / 354,12 kg, all at a bodyweight of less than 190 Lbs / 86,26 kg)

Wasn't his deadlift done with fake plates according to Kaz.

Neither of them are the strongest man who ever lived anyway.

    - Heaviest bench is double Franco's (Ryan Kennelly)
    - Heaviest squat is almost double Franco's (Vladislav Alhazov)
    - Heaviest DL is 250+ pounds heavier (Andy Bolton)
    - Heaviest total in competition is 2850 (Donnie Thompson)

Using those numbers, Franco had a calculated Wilks total of 575.65. The current highest Wilks score is held by Sergey Fedosienko with 886.

Franco was strong, but most certainly not the strongest of all time.

You answered your own question 800>785. So there is at least one person stronger than him

And if his best competition deadlift is 750lbs I doubt he's doing reps with 785

But yes, he was a freak and VERY strong

Also Sam Byrd has squatted 1050 at 198lbs bodyweight, and 675 raw in competition (reportedly squatted 750 but got called for depth)
There is no such thing as 'strong enough'

who else? and IIRC, colombu weighed around 175 when he deadlifted 750+.
Nonetheless, I think pound for pound he may have been one of the strongest bodybuilders who ever lived. Its scary to wonder what he could have hit if he had trained for powerlifting or strongman.

No it wasnt raw. Ill bet he Kabuki hits close to 900 in Augest.

Agreed but he was a powerlifter that decided to get lean. He did train for Powerlifting.

No. Not even in the top 20. There are proably 5 people on this site stronger lb for lb, sub 200, Chris Jenkins, Kabuki, Benbriz, PeonLover, Smitsky....I am sure I forgot a couple.

Ive done extensive research on raw lifting records. Franco was strong no doubt. He had supposedly done a 475 bench at 165 early in his career and he did pull over 700 weighing under 181. he did bench over 500 and he did squat over 600 weighing under 190, but from everything I could find none of these were competition lifts. the 475 bench was mentioned by him but he never did such a lift in any contest as was claimed. So most his big lifts have no merit. Not saying he wasnt strong but much was exageration. Mike Bridges and Rick Gaugler were legitimate strong powerlifters in franco's bw range and did there lifts in competition. Gaugler went 600 squat raw, 451 bench raw and hit a 714 deadlift raw all at 165. He made a 710 squat wearing an 80's squat suit and wraps. Bridges at 181 was far superior to Franco. He made lifts of 837 in 80's squat gear, 523 bench raw and he also pulled a 771 deadlift all at 181lbs! as for the bench at 165 and 181 Rick Weil is the greatest of all. He did 485 raw at 165 and a 556 raw at 181. He also did an exhibition lift weighing 199 lbs hitting 600lbs again with out a bench shirt. These are just a few guys who weighed around what Franco weighed who were much stronger.
    Best Competition lifts

    squat: 490
    bench: 350
    dead: 512

    Best Training lifts
    squat: 495
    Bench: 363
    dead: 518

You guys are saying that people in suits and wraps are stronger than people who didn't have these luxuries. I'm pretty sure Franco Colombu wasn't a suited lifter, so why compare his lifts to suited totals?

Sorry, I forgot that 1-ply suits magically and instantaneously added 1000 lbs to anyone's squat...

To me, single-ply IPF lifts in a meet >>>>>> random gym lifts by a bodybuilder...

I wasn't saying that they make the weight insanely easier, but you can't just compare them as if they were under the same circumstances. That's like saying a 355 pound bench is the exact same as a 335 pound bench, because its not THAT big of a difference. A difference is there.

    Well, that's your prerogative.

Franco was strong, but most certainly not the strongest of all time.

Bringing up Donnie's lifts sort of invalidates the premise that lifts are legit if they're done in competition.

did you block out the entire discussion of RAW lifters that owned colombu above in a meet or are you just being willfully ignorant to ignite a gear bashing discussion for no reason?

Bodybuilder lifts as published in magazines are the '70s and '80s version of e-stats.

I am sure Franco was a strong bodybuilder. To say he was one of the strongest men ever is flat out silly.

As much of a promoter/marketer as Joe Weider was, if Franco was THAT GOOD, don't you think they would have made it impossible to miss. Having him take a national PL title would have brought readership to the mag and $$. If he could have, he would have.

I can believe he had the strength levels to be a lower to mid-level national competitor. Which is VERY STRONG and deserves tons of respect.

Anything beyond that is just wishful thinking and believing too much marketing.

    Well, that's your prerogative.
And do you really think that if Olech Jaroslaw squatted 793.656 lbs in an IPF meet at a weight below 165 lbs, he couldn't squat 665 lbs raw in the gym at Franco's BW(175 lbs)? He'd probably take that weight for a ride, and sh*t on all of Franco's lifts... that is, if his lifts were even legit, and apparently Kaz disagreed... and I'd give much more credit to Bill Kazmaier than some guido bodybuider from the '70s... Don't be so naive.

I hate this pound for pound bull****, it doesn't take into account height or frame.... Seems like the only people who spout off about it are short or under 200 lbs.

Compare a 5'7" lifter who pulls say 700 @ under 200 and everyone jizzes fireworks about it, but some guy who is 6'3" pulling 750 at over 200 and he's **** on because of being a higher weight. Comparing records between weight classes is stupid... there's a reason that they are split up in competition and they should be compared separately too.

And to beat a dead horse - Colombu was NOT the strongest man that lived, not by a longshot.

I hate 'Ifs'. What gives you the right to classify Colombu as 'some guido bodybuilder'; I mean, what have you accomplished that gives you the right to discredit him? Mad props to the people who did manage to lift more than him, but I just don't see why you don't even feel like acknowledging that he was strong.

Because being a short little guido prick doing gym lifts does not hold a candle to established and judged records. Pretty sure The_Cannibal knows alot more about lifting and competing than some little 17 year old.

    Understand now?

LOL... How does it feel for 'some little 17 year old' to demolish your lifts?
