I was 7 years old & like everyone else completely caught up in the fever that swept the US in 73' right before this happened. Vietnam, Watergate....the country needed a hero.
I remember to this day watching this live on TV & just knowing, even at that young age, that I had just seen something truly miraculous that maybe happens once a century, if ever:

I never let the liberal *******s who hated our military and our warriors get me down about Vietnam. I knew that we should have been supporting our military in that war to see it through to victory. So, the whole Vietnam malaise never bothered me; I was more prepared to bust a smelly hippie in the head than spit on a soldier. The liberals and the ball-less politicians lost that war...not our military.
As for Watergate, I never let the media sweep me into the fury that was portrayed there. Dirty politics? Absolutely. Prosecutable? Yes. It was prosecuted and it ruined the popular media's perception of an otherwise pretty good Presidency. A "dark moment in American history"...like Walter the Commie Cornkite wanted me to think? Hardly. Frankly, the ****e going on with ACORN right now makes Watergate look like Pattycakes.
Secretariat? What a fantastic horse!!! Loved every second of watching that athlete perform!!!

big red was special...beyond special. another favorite of mine was affirmed....no matter what, the damned horse was going to beat alydar by a nose. alydar, in turn, sired yet another favorite of mine: easy goer, who was a special horse but had a head thing with sunday silence.
