Dodge Viper = Pure performance, No compromises
The ZR1 has just suffered it's first defeat (hopefully the last) to the Viper ACR. It's actually quite funny because the guys at the Viper forums never thought for a second the ZR1 would be any faster than the regular '08 SRT-10...they never gave it a chance against the ACR.

The ACR ran a 7:22!! The ZR1 clocked in at 7:26 They're oh so quiet over at the corvette forum...I can't wait for the excuses! I guess it's better the ZR1 got it's ass kicked by another domestic instead of an import.
The GT-R V-Spec better be one hell of a car to touch those times.

The Viper driver seemed more skilled imho especially around corners where he would downshift and then grip and turn and hit the apex the vette driver seemed to try and almost hit and smash it. Great race speeds though intense intense course. Glad they make vipers that can turn now :-P
What daring! What outrageousness! What insolence! What arrogance!... I salute you.

They're both great drivers. The ZR1 driver was Jim Mero...he's an awesome driver. I've watched the lap video multiple times and he was driving the wheels off the ZR1. The ZR1 simply isn't fast enough to run with a Viper around a track. The ZR1 should have a much faster top speed however because the Viper ACR produces a lot of downforce (1500 lbs @ 150mph) to help highspeed handling. The regular Viper should have a top speed comparable to the ZR1 and for less money.

You're comparing, literally a factory race car (ACR) to a factor street car (ZR1) Then put the tires the Viper ACR uses on the ZR1 and let's have a real race.
Viper ACR has Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires... barely street legal race tires.
Corvette ZR1 has Michelin Pilot Sport SP2 tires... street tires.
B U T the times are for "factory production models". Race car or not, it's a factory production car. If they took the ZR1, stripped it, added barely legal tires, and made a race version of that, it would kick the ACR's butt. But for now, the ACR is the fastest production car around the Ring.
Hmmmmm, maybe it's time for a ZR1-R or Z06-R ala C6-R"Modern man is conditioned to expect instant gratification but any success or triumph realized quickly, with only marginal effort is necessarily shallow. Meaningful achievement takes time, hard work, persistence, patience, proper intent and constant self-awareness. The path to such success is punctuated by failure, consolidation and renewed effort. I'd definitely grab the Corvette just for the price, which I'm assuming is much less than the Viper.

WTF are "barely street legal race tires"? Either the tires are street legal or not! The PS2s are completely 100% street legal. GM could have put PS2s on the ZR1...THEY DIDN'T...that's their problem.
The whole "ZR1 could've done better if it would've had this, that, and those things" argument is asinine! It was GM's task to take the Z06 and make an even faster more badass version...what they came up with was the ZR1. Now you're talking about they have to go back and strip it down and try to make an even faster "race-version" ZR1? WTF?
Keep in mind the Porsche Turbo GT2 also comes with the same PS2s the ACR uses and the ACR still smoked it by over 3 seconds at Buttonwillow Raceway.Last edited by PROBLEMatic; 09-05-2008 at 10:49 AM.

Actually the ZR1 will cost buyers much more than the Viper ACR. They both have a MSRP around $100K. But because of the hype that is surrounding the ZR1 there is a big dealership markup on them. But a lot of wind has just been knocked out of the ZR1's sail because it just got its ass beat. Chevy was touting it was the badass/fastest production car and Dodge easily beat it without even adding any hp to the Viper ACR. Dodge knew they wouldn't need to add any more power to beat anything offered from Chevy and they would have had to certify another drivetrain if they did.

Oh and another thing...The Viper ACR is NOT a race car! Have you ever driven a race car? The ACR and a real race car are WORLDS apart. It's crazy to even try and compare them! The Viper ACR has comfy seats, cold A/C, electric windows, working doors, no roll cage, street legal tires, runs on regular fuel that can be bought at a gas station, and a suspension that is fine whacking a pot hole. It's even quiet if you stay off the throttle. To be honest, it's not really that different from the regular Viper. Is it as comfortable as a ZR1 on the street? Probably not, 'but it ain't no race car'. Far from it.... Many ACR owners have already made 1000+ mile trips.
It is not, and never was, Dodge's intent to sell more than 1-2 thousand Vipers a year. Matter of fact, they are built by hand. I'm not sure of the max capacity, but I doubt it's much more than they sell in a good year (1,500 of so).
BTW - Dodge does make a 'race only' Viper the public can buy. It's called the Competition Coupe.R135
