Questions comments VW owners
Experiences owning a VW, maintenance
Thoughts on the Rabbit?
I'm deciding between this and a Mini Cooper.
Not looking for performance, cold air intakes, racing VTECs, really just a well styled 2 door compact.
It would be automatic; I live in NYC.

Automatic makes the most sense, I drive like 3miles a day max with a stop light on every other corner.

I drive an 08 GTI haven't have any trouble with it yet, fit 5 people really comfortable and maintenance wise oil change at dealership around 50-80 depend on location. Only problem is that there a minor rattle problem when it get cold.

VW's are crap in terms of reliability. A new car should not have half the issues I've come across with Jettas and Golfs. The rabbit is on the same platform so choose wisely.

I've had my 05 gti for over 2 yrs now and didn't have any trouble with it. I'm lookin to get a new car within the next few months and was actually thinking about leasing a brand new gti, I'm a fan of vw's and german cars in general.

Friend bought an 02 Golf with 60k on it and sold it by 70k, **** was in the shop constantly. Electric, engine, brakes... everything was ****ed.. Worked at Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge and a lot of the newish VW models that came in had the strangest problems. There was an 07 GTI with a siezed engine and a W8 passat with a blown auto tranny, both at under 10k miles. Those are the two that came to mind but Audi's and VWs are notorious for this, luxurious cars for the price but headaches for the most part.
I'm not saying every car is a winner (Chrysler especially... holy **** they suck) but if you're gonna drop some money on a car, read a lot of reviews and common problem reports.

I have an 06 Audi A4 (Audi is owned by VW). I'm a German car fan. I find its either a hit or miss for most people. If you want a German car, you need to take care of it more than any other, but you should take care of your car no matter what, so theres no issue. One common thing I've read on VW/Audi boards is that you MUST wait for your engine to get warm in order to drive it hard. Dont turn it on and drive the hell out of it. Let the engine get to 90 degrees and then have some fun with it.
Rabbits are nice. But do yourself a favor and get the manual!
www.vwvortex.com is a really good site for all VW questions.

Learned to drive in a Rabbit, was in my first accident in said rabbit. I want another Rabbit. The only thing different I want is a diesel.
The Germans know their compressions ignitions motors. That's for sure.
On the other hand, the Mini's are great cars and a blast to drive. I'm not sure if they are the same way, but you used to be able to drive it for a year or two and sell it for about the same or more than you paid for it.
