Do you find yourself having to resist your appetite in order to prevent weight/fat gain; like, frequently or even on a daily basis?
Is this a challenge for most people?

I feel the exact same way. I've been eating crap now that summers here, drinking, going out etc. I haven't gained much back, I monitor that much. But I'm also playing some sort of sport, walking or running every day, so it's balancing out.
After a few days of changing my diet, I don't crave garbage and seem to be able to go months eating decently. But ya, the past few weeks I'm always digging into something. Usually ice cream at work.
When I was eating clean for most of the year, if I was hungry as hell, I'd eat a ton of something decent. Oatmeal or cottage cheese or something. You get alot of fill, for lower calories. Vs. eating like..cookies or cake, etc.
late for work. see you guys!I like my food clean, and my women dirty.

It was tough in the first week but I find that since I started eating 200g + of protein I am actually more satisfied. About the only time I get cravings now is after dinner before my 6th meal ( either cottage cheese or casein ). Getting my ass off the couch and doing something usually curbs this.
Excuses are the seeds of regret.

I wasn't exactly fat, but pretty damn sloppy so I'll contribute.
I'm pretty good at keeping my diet in check, of course there is an occasional cheat day though when I go out with the family to eat and not really in full control of what's available... stuff like I don't worry about anyways. Do I get cravings to goto mcdonald's and grab a big mac, large fries, and a dr. pepper? Damn right I do. That's the mental game though, gotta stay strong and resist!

I don't have a hunger problem, but that is probably because my wife has figured out what is both healthy and filling. She has acquired the fine art of stuffing me to the point of extreme happiness with a 500 cal dinner. Long on protein, hard to digest carbs (whole grain homemade breads and pastas), virtually no processed food, tons of high fiber veggies.
I snack after dinner / workout with some high fiber fruit like apples or mangos. The biggest change was simply no buying "bad things". If the bad food is not around, you can't eat it can you?

I've been eating clean for a few weeks now and my cravings have gone away. In fact, I'm having to force myself to go over 2000 calories a day. I used to love McDonalds and sweets (Sonic Blasts!) but now I think I'd just be guilty as hell if I had something like that. I think counting calories has helped in this regard. Anytime I start to want something I shouldn't have, I just envision having to type it all in on FitDay and adjusting what I eat the rest of the day, and I talk myself out of it .

quite simply, no, I just monitor my calories and it becomes routine. I dont eat to clean because its not logical when applied to the real world, your not going to eat clean 90% of the time for the rest of your life so why do it now?
I stay within my calorie range and get my needed protein. No need to deprive yourself of different foods while trying to drop weight. Granted if you want that "Healthy" mindset then I'm all for it...but the difference between clean and non clean foods when it comes to weight loss doesnt matter.Last edited by LiftHeavy85; 06-25-2009 at 01:11 PM.

The worst for me is when I'm at work... since I work at a computer all day and there is nothing but my willpower preventing me from eating the never ending stream of free donuts that vendors drop off =( =( =(

Ya I'm with ya man!!! I'm at my desk prolly 70% of the time. Right now, I have a jug of protein on one side of my desk and a big vitamin water XXX on the other. I don't get free donuts very often but sometimes the groups will buy breakfast food from McD's.
The worst for me is my WIFE! She's pretty skinny and doesn't really pack pounds on no matter what. So last night I'm like starving for dinner and she run out to the store and comes back with a bag of chips and ice cream. She's driving me crazy.... Everything else she does is cool.. but her eating habbits are really putting a strain on my weight loss. (I didn't give in last night)Starting Weight: 290lbs

<< Former fat girl (286 pounds)
The more cleanly I eat, the fewer urges I get, but every now and then they still come. As long as I get enough protein, fiber, and healthy fat every day, I don't feel like resistance is impossible, though. And occasionally, if I really want something, I have it and move on.

x2 on the eating while bored. But only happens when I am at home not doing anything at all like at night or something. But overall no problems eating good. when I get into "work out mode" i personally find food as just calories.
btw I dont eat donuts never liked them, but I hear ya on free food and ****. Gets annoying when people offer you something and everyone is eating down and yore just like no thanks, eventually telling them that you don't eat that ****.Last edited by grunmn; 06-26-2009 at 10:21 AM.

It all comes down to willpower/self control
I always ask myself "Is eating this worth it?"
I'm not as lazy as I used to be but I'm still pretty lazy. I know that whatever I eat needs to be burned off somehow and I'd rather show a little self control in not eat something that will require me to work it off.
Long term satisfaction of losing weight > Short term satisfaction of any food
And this. You don't try to build a wall.
You don't set out to build a wall.
You don't say, "I'm going to build the biggest, baddest, greatest wall that's ever been built!".
You don't start there.
You say, "I'm going to lay this brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid.".
You do that every single day, and soon you'll have a wall.

I have a serious problem with appetite, I WANT to just eat and carry on eating. Think of how you look now, how you want to look, and how you will look if you carry on eating ****loads. Does it for me. Also thinking, after being at the gym, "if I eat crap now, what the hell did I put the effort into training in the first place."

i rarely get cravings. & when i do, i make a lower-calorie version.
but yea. i don't really eat immensely healthy, anymore. these days, i'm more into calorie control, instead. i love healthy foods. i love most healthy foods out there. but i also love some non-healthy foods out there, too. (however, most seem to be pretty low in calories, such as gummy candies. xD) so, i fit it into my day as well, as to avoid expending some energy on mental anguish. bahaha.
as for my appetite, it's usually pretty straight. i.e.: it doesn't dip too low or go too up high; it stays consistant/constant. however, sometimes it does dip lower when i'm really tired. but that can also trigger it to skyrocket, too. i also get really hungry after teaching certain classes, too. ... but all of the extra energy i intake is always burned off whilst teaching, though. ... would be nice if i could burn some stored energy, though. but @ least teaching acts as an "insurance" incase i ever over-eat due to being tired, stressed, etc, which doesn't really happen but did happen last night: italian cookies = *drools* good stuff! & i felt like death when i went to bed, too.Last edited by trance__dreamer; 06-26-2009 at 04:43 PM. Reason: italian cookies. =O

I find the hardest thing to change is the late night craving. I've always worked in bars, or late night hours, thus when I got off work the only options were McDonalds or some other drive thru option. That started a terrible habit. I found that it was more boredom related though, nothing to do, eat a whopper! I find that I can kill that craving with some cold water, but it's still an ongoing battle!

I went from a reasonably fit 200 lbs. to 250+ lbs. and borderline obesity over a 2 year period, but even so, appetite control has never been a problem for me. I will occasionally overeat, but I have no real compulsion to.
My problem was that when my daughter was born & time became a major limiting factor in my schedule, training and nutrition were two of the first things to go. It was easier to skip the gym & hit a drive through on the way to work, so that's what I did most days. Sometimes I had fast food for every meal.
Well, I've seen first hand where that path leads, and I didn't like it there. Training & nutrition are major priorities again; I've found other ways to "make time" when the need arises.

Now that I actually keep track of what I'm eating I really don't have any problem coming in at or under my cutting calorie goal every day. I have a big appetite, but watching the cals and macros make it so that I can eat as much as I want and still come in under maint luckily.
Though yeah, when I go home for a break or weekend I'll usually let go of my diet since my family always takes me out to eat and such, then its back to the gym and deficit eating for a while again."Sorry I didn't make it to the beauty pageant"

I use to eat like a horse, since I've changed and with time, my habits are so much better. I use to crave candy and chips and soda, now it's water, fruits and chocolate. It's a challenge everyday to eat healthy. It's a challenge everyday you wake up and step foot on the ground. You challenge yourself to be better, you look in the mirror and tell yourself "Today's the day..."
So just give yourself the credit, you said it outloud, now follow through. If you get hungry, drink some water and let it digest, if you're still hungry eat something. Eating is fun, shouldn't be a nazi war camp and laid out to the 0.0001g of calories. That will just end in an epic fail. Now I'm not saying go out and eat tons of fast food and pounds of candy, but you don't have to remove the foods you love. Moderation, that's the word here you've probably hear a lot.
People drink booze, still have an amazing body. People eat cake, candy, fast foods, etc and you look at them and ask HOW?! They don't do it all the time and for the most part, it's a treat. Let it be that, a treat, but not a treat that you give yourself for every smallest thing, if that was the case you'd never lose weight.
I write everything down, it's a reminder of how things are. I don't even write the calories (I know so much about foods it's not even funny), I just make sure my protein intake is where I want it and my calories are where they should be. I don't go crazy if I eat chips or whatever. I could be a lot more strict, but the results I AM getting are good enough that it warrants how behaviour with food.

I drive past a Taco Bell, Arby's, and McDonalds every time I leave my apartment, no matter where I'm going. If I'm headed to work I pass an additional Taco Bell & McDonald's, plus a Wendy's, Steak 'n Shake, and Subway (FYI, that's only a 4.5 mile drive). It doesn't help that half of them are open until 1-2am... and it really doesn't help that the other half are open 24 hours.
I'll tell you, for the first couple weeks after I cleaned up my diet, driving past those places was a daily struggle. But I hardly notice them now that I've gotten used to a clean diet again... fast food restaurants are just "background noise" to me these days.
