Punching bag repair.
Not truly a fitness question I realize. Anybody have experience with punching bag repairs? I have an 80lb heavy bag (leather cover) that I typically leave outdoors, I was considering using a leather conditioner on it to avoid weather damage but while doing a little workout last night I split the bag, I caught it and ceased my workout while it was still a small split (5" or so) so it should be easily repairable I'm thinking. Typically I've seen canvas bags repaired with duct tape so I'm assuming the same would work here. My question after all that rambling is should I bother conditioning the area around the split before I wrap it or should I just skip the conditioning on that area to prevent the oils from inhibiting the adhesive on the tape?
At the revolution school the other weekend a guy walked into the second classroom session late, sweating profusly, hair straight up with dirt all over him. He sat down, raised his hand and said: "please explain brake fade to me". -CSG @Corral.net

Just wrap it so the padding stays in the bag. What brand of heavy bag is it? I researched a leather bag from Everlast cost $499, where did you get an 80lb leather bag? I bought a H2O bag from Everlast. The water bladder got a slit in it and was leaking. Every adhesive, glue I tried couldn't repair it. Luckily for me, the slit was near the bottom of the bladder so I just filled it with water turned it upside down and placed it back in the bag. Happy Training.

Everlast as well, though this one was about $200 or so cheaper than the one you found (on sale at Big5).

get a piece of plastic similar to the thickness of the existing and use super glue it on flat and heat up lightly with a hair dryer, it should work

Just tape it, no problem. I keep 2 bags outside, both have lots of duct tape on them. It holds find, I never "Conditioned" crap. Just wiped it off real quick, wrapped a roll around it, and kicked the crap out of it some more..
Heavy bags are like baseball mitts, they are easier to use once they get broken in a little. Then.. Ya never want to get rid of them

Alright it's cleaned up and taped up, I'm going to pull it down and roll it around to smooth it out in a bit, we'll see how well it holds up. I really wasn't looking forward to a lengthy or expensive repair so I'm glad to see that a roll of duct tape seems to have done the job.
