How is 1980 and 2001 a controversy?

Because of the controversy over them. Two of the most disputed judging decisions ever.

Looking at pics and vids, Arnold was the clear winner in 1980, without a doubt. And 2001 Ronnie blew Jay away, although the pic you posted was from 2003. I think some people just werent happy and have to make it seem like it was even close in those competitions. They must be blind.

2002 was a bigger robbery IMO...2001 Ronnie won and fairly won.
2002 Ronnie's was just a mess and Levrone was better...

I have seen this pic before didnt think much of it at the time..BUT since being a member here and hearing all the HYPE about cages and the "safety factor" of them I tend to get a good laugh out of it.

Usually there's safety bars in the cages. Removing them kinda defeats the purpose, and as you can see, there's no safety bars in the pic...

The AAU launched the Mr. America contest in 1938, but it wasn't until Chris Dickerson in 1970 that a person of color won. During the first 32 annual renditions, great black bodybuilders such as George Paine, Melvin Wells, Art Harris and Elmo Santiago were denied the title. Despite his unparalleled muscularity, Sergio Oliva lost the Mr. America three times, including 1966, the year he switched to the IFBB and won their Mr. World title. (Cuban refugee Oliva reportedly lost the 1963 AAU Mr. Chicago because he didn't speak English like a born American.)

Joe and Ben Weider and the IFBB were instrumental in breaking down bodybuilding's racial barriers. They heavily promoted black bodybuilders like Leroy Colbert in the '50s, and Harold Poole won the IFBB Mr. America in 1964 (the year Oliva finished seventh in the AAU version)."


I don't know the facts here around the allegations of racism, but looks like a pretty self-serving set of statements written by the Weiders themselves.
