    Fruit. Fast or slow carbs?

Ok so i am royally confused about fruit. Are they fast or slow digesting? I have read that fruit is slow in some magazines and articles and fast in others. Which is it?

Take a banana for example. Isnt its GI like 50 or something??

    Thanks,

The only thing u should care about is that bananas have a higher calorie value than other fruits eg: apples, and so you just need to make sure that you factor that into your diet if your trying to cut, or watch your bulk deit

Both. Since it contains a number of different sugars and structural makeups which behave differently.

The non-fructose monosaccharides and shorter chains of monosaccharides will be more readily available while the longer chains won't be as.

The fructose portion will not immediately yield usable glucose [or be converted into fatty acids] since it needs to be handled by the liver first.

One would also need to consider the ripeness as it pertains to the starch : sugar proportions.

GI and how fast carbs are digested tend to correspond with each other, but they don't have to. Complex carbohydrates (grains) generally digest slower than simple carbohydrates (fruits and such). But, GI is a measure of insulin response which depends on many variables. For example fruits have fiber in them which lowers the insulin response. For this reason fruits (most at least) are fast digesting, but low GI.

    EDIT:
I was corrected on what GI measures. It is not the insulin response, but instead blood glucose levels.

    Lots of misinformation here.

Glycemic index is not a measure of insulin response. It's a comparative scale based upon how foods raise blood sugar levels after eating.

Fructose is a major factor in the GI rating since fructose needs to be handled/processed by the liver first before any of it can end up getting dumped into circulation to impact blood glucose.

My bad, you are correct. Again there is a correlation between the two (as with fast and slow digesting carbs) but they are not the same.

Wrong again. Something be low GI but produce a disproportionate insulin response.

    Talking Fast v.s Slow Carbs.

    Hi there,

Be aware if Glycemic index especially when you're trying to speed up metabolism. Nutritionists and doctors all over the map are now recommending following the GI index rather than dieting. Specially for competitors, this way of eating is MOST IMPORTANT! Eating fast carbs like most fruit, bread, grains ect must absolutely be taken into consideration when customizing your meal plan.

When carbs are broken down they form glucose (sugar) thats carried throughout your body before it is absorbed by cells to produce energy. The GI determines how carbs can affect your blood glucose levels on a two hour span. When a food is broken down quickly (fast carbs) it causes spikes and drops in your blood glucose levels.Slow carbs are therefore preferred as they provide a slower release of energy, helping your curb cravings and keeping you alert throughout the day.

So to answer your question, I wouldn't eat the banana!
    Hope this was helpful!
    Have a great day.

fruit veggies and herbs digest the quickest doesnt matter what kind they will always digest quicker then meat. They say it takes anywhere from 48 to 64 hours to digest meat. So go fruit crazy if you want, I did 30 bananas a day on top of my diet just having 10 bananas and fruit as a smoothie with meals. You get lean gains and its healthy haha

    No, it's extremely unhealthy.

That consumption would provide over 225 grams of fructose per day, which can cause acute liver and metabolic disorders.

I meant the original gal who said "I wouldn't eat the banana!" Which she prefaced with "great and empirically sound" information.
