    How many calories do you burn @ HIIT?

    The title pretty much says it all.

    I would like ALL of you guys and girls opinion of how many calories you burn when you do cardio and if you could also add how many times you do it a week?
    Ain't nothing to it, but to do it.

    I do an incumbent bike cardio machine, which I do for 45 minutes 5 days a week. It is digital, and it says that typically burn 550 calories in 15 miles of incumbent biking, in 45 minutes.

    I usually work on the principal of burning 10 cals per minute of moderate cardio work and around 15 per minute for high intensity.

    45min of HIIT = impossible. 45min moderate intensity makes more sense. I do 45min low-moderate intensity bicycle and I'm guessing I burn between 300-400 calories.

    exactly u end up burning much less HIIT then someone who's just jogging the whole time... but in your post workout, apparently, you have an increased breathing rate, which is thus, increased oxidation of fat.. this lasts about 24-48hours ? i asked the sports science lecturer the effects of HIIT, they did an experiment awhile back, she told me this.

    HIIT helps throughout the whole day, jogging and running at a steady pace doesnt. So the calories burned at first glance are not a good indicator of the tue benefits of HIIT

    While that is true, the magnitide of EPOC for even the most strenuous HIIT session is about a glass of OJs worth of calories and for what most would do in the real world it would be less. The amount tends to get overexaggerated.

    Indeed, beyond the short term calorie burn & time efficiency, there are a number of metabolic, physiological and nutrient-partitioning effects that it can bring with lasting impact.

    HIIT = Anaerobic Cardio

    It's basically the 1 RM in max of cardio.

    You go all out for short periods of time (Typically 15-30 seconds).

    This maximal exertion places more strain on the body than moderate intensity work does because you're pushing the body to the limit of what it can do.

    i hear that with hiit cardio you burn more calories then moderate cardio but a lower percenage of those calories are from fat, but you burn so much more calories that you actually will burn more fat caloriees plus you dont have to spend as muc time doing cardio

    For EPOC not exactly. Breathing rate isn't necessarily elevated for the period. Oxygen intake is elevated for a period of time but more importantly energy is being expended at an elevated rate post-exercise - relating to the body's restoration and repair processes as well as hormonal responses to exercise. The "oxygen debt" concept of EPOC is outdated, simplistic and not accurate.

    But again, it's not a breadwinner.

    yea, pretty much. Some people think steady state is the only way to go, and others think HIIT is the alpha and the omega. They really are apples and oranges though, so neither is better than the other, and your best bet would of course be doing both.

    The reasoning behind HIIT is getting the most calories burned in a short amount of time, plus the fact that many BB'ers simply do not have the fitness to jog slowly for long distances.
