New Research: You Can Reduce Fat Cell Count?
Taken from another board. Thought this was interesting since I've always thought you can only create them but never destroy them once created.
Kill Fat Cells for Good
Latest research shows that you?ve got more control than you think.
It was once believed that we were unable to reduce the amount of fat cells in our bodies and that they no longer multiplied past puberty, but instead swelled in size during weight gain. But, according to Dr. John Berardi, an assistant professor at The University of Texas at Austin, that is now dated knowledge. ?During overfeeding, even in adults, fat cells can increase in size and number,? he says. ?In fact, the way it works is that fat cells differentiate into precursor cells that become new cells, and these can refill with fat.? But new research indicates that fat stores can also die off. ?New research shows that all sorts of interesting things occur in fat cells,? says Berardi. ?From hormone production to metabolism, the days of people thinking that fat cells are dormant storage depot are gone.?
So what does this mean for you? These findings mean that we now have much more control in fighting fat. Professor John Prins of the University of Queensland says that a protein called fibroblast growth factor 1 (FGF1) causes different types of cells to multiply but can also be used to isolate immature cells and manipulate or even stop their growth. ?This shows that the primary need for fat cells is to store fat, but when you lose weight it?s possible for those fat cells to die off because they?re no longer needed ? they?re not sitting around waiting to be fed,? Prins told ABC Science Online.
The topic of fat and how it comes and goes is probably the most misunderstood of them all. Women are constantly wondering why fat is stored primarily in the midsection and whether doing 300 crunches a day will helps reduce it. The answer is simple: Fat (stored energy) accumulates in the stomach, hips and buttocks because it requires less energy for your body to lug around. If your excess fat were on your limbs, it would require more energy and caloric expenditure to swing that load around all day, every day.
In a Wake Forest University study, exercise was found to play the biggest role ? more so than diet ? in reducing the size of fat cells. In the study, 45 obese women were broken up into three groups: The first group was put on a calorie-restricted diet with no fitness, the second group dieted but also walked three days a week and the third group followed the diet and walked at a higher intensity for three days. In the end, they all lost weight, reduced their body fat and shrunk the fat cells in their hips, but those who didn?t exercise at all and just dieted didn?t reduce the size of their fat cells around their waistlines. Those who exercised reduced the size of their abdominal fat cells by 18 percent.

That actually is pretty significant if someone found that fat cells can be destroyed.

What's even weirder is that i go to that University (University of Texas at Austin) and did not know John Berardi was an Asst. Prof. there

No, he has been known to throw some skeptical theories here and there, but then again hes also trained some incredible athletes (look at his G-flux theory)

He said that back in the 90's lol.
"Well what we have done in our laboratory here in Brisbane and also in Cambridge in the UK, was we've demonstrated that human fat cells have the ability to die in simple terms. "
http://www.abc.net.au/rn/talks/8.30/...ies/s20847.htm
And the "new research shows that all sorts of interesting things occur in fat cells" should have been a tip off ... old news lol
