Well, sure, but you've hardly got any muscle mass at all on you at 140 lbs.

Are you trying to cut weight for an athletic competition or something?

You've been seriously misinformed about something. What makes you think you could "get bulky" even if you wanted to?

You and I are pretty similar. Let me guess, high school student, certainly not flabby, on the lean side without a lot of definition?
I'm 5'6", so I think I've got a bit more muscle on my bones and I weigh the same as you.
What I'm doing is upping my protein intake, cutting out almost all sugars, limiting saturated fats and excess carbs, and doing my normal physical activity. It's been a week, but man, there are already results, certainly recommended!

Do you think most of us would work out for years if it were that easy to build muscle?

People have different builds... I don't consider weight and height to be such a quick judgement of muscle. I weigh 140 pounds, I'm 5'8", yet I shoulder press 120 pounds, I bench like 185, I can curl 80-90, all these numbers for sets not for one-rep maxes. To top that, I still have fat on me, so I guess if you mean "barely any muscle" you're comparing it to people who are ridiculously built to the point of that unnatural look, then yeah, I guess I could agree.
I have a friend who's 5'9" and weighs a good 175-180. The guy appears to have less fat than I do (flat stomach) but he's also less muscular. With those 35-40 pounds, basically same height, he has no advantage to me in muscular composition. I think weight on its own can be very misleading.
To the OP: You won't really bulk that fast. You shouldn't fear bulking cause it'll take longer than losing weight. Just lift weights, diet, and do cardio and worst comes to worst if you're unhappy with your muscle mass stop lifting weights and the muscle will go away again.

Well first of all in your pictures you don't look like you can bench 185 more then 1 time nor can you curl 80-90 more then 1 time. If you can than you have some sort of awesome strength without muscle size gene. I only say this because I've been lifting for a while and I weigh 185 and can barely bench 185 for 3 sets of 10. That gives me a 1 rep of 250. If you can do that then I salute you.
Back to the OP though, IMHO I think that if you weigh 140 and are 5' 8" you should bulk to at least the 160's. That's were I was in high school and I looked pretty good.

well i've been on these fourms quite alot. people repeatedly state that they should bulk up then cut. i'm just lookin for a way to cut instead of bulking.

this is what i did for 3 months:
wake up 5
hiit cardio on elliptical 30 minutes
breakfast: oatmeal w/ banana
snack: 5 egg whites, 1 whole
lunch: 4 oz chicken, 4 oz green beans, 1/2 sweet potato
pre workout: oatmeal w/ raisins
post: whey shake (optimum 2 scoops)
dinner: 4 oz chicken w/ veggies
workout splits:
Day 1: Chest, back, abs
Day 2: Quads, Hamstrings, Calves
Day 3: Shoulders, biceps, triceps
did probably 10-12 reps with 3 sets, 2 exercises for each body part (except abs)
also did cardio after workout, 30 minute on treadmill (stairclimber on leg day)
3 months i did this.
did not see results i was lookin for.

The only way your going to look cut is if you have mass to support it. If you don't have muscle what are you going to show? You need to bulk up slowly to keep the fat to a minimum then cut.

that's exactly what i'm trying to say. why do i need to bulk? why can't i just cut? yeah, gaining muscle speeds metabolism and looks great, but i don't want to look big and bulky. i don't want that at all.

Look if your goal is to get to 130 then just reduce calories. You probably still wont be happy because you will look the same way except 10 lbs lighter because you will end up losing muscle with the fat.
If you want to LOOK better people are saying to bulk then cut so that you have better definition. Bulking doesn't mean gainging 50lbs. You can simply add 15/20 lbs then easily cut what you want.
You cant reveal what isn't there.

It will take you a long time to look big and bulky just bulk for two months and cut for a month. Trust me you will like the results a lot better IMO.

Clean bulk is the best to keep the fat down, you will gain a little fat but will come off fast if done right.

When I get to my goal weight and start a bulk I plan on eating the same stuff I do now, just more of it so that I can get 500 calories over maintenance. I might have the occasional pizza or burger but I am mainly going to eat the same stuff.

you are 17 and yes i understand you dont want to get fat again... ( i was there ) but if you just eat hard and clean plus lift hard and do some cardio then you will see the results you want. try eating 500 above maintenance and make sure to lift hard! no pain no gain.
I have lost 120 pounds and found that I would never get where i wanted until I bulked up some more. So I bulked up 20 pounds and now down another 5 pounds. Even though im only down 105 pounds I look a helluva lot better than when i was down 120
if you eat clean and exercise you will see results.
