Getting my tonsils out--Need nutritional plan!
Hey all,
I'm getting my tonsils out in a few weeks, it's a completely liquid/VERYsoft-food diet for 2 weeks, with no cream based foods the first couple of days. I've worked my butt off for the last month to put on muscle, and I don't want to waste away. AND of course, no working out either during the recovery... any nutritional ideas you can throw at me so I can maintain some muscle mass?? Besides ice cream...
Thanks!
Avi

I'm going to have to do the same thing. I'm getting my wisdom teeth taken out in about a month. I plan on just throwing everything in a blender. I'd suggest making a homemade weight gain shake with peanut butter, oatmeal, bananas, protein powder, and milk all blended together in a blender. You should be able to survuve on liquid foods for a while without losing muscle as long as you meet you daily calorie needs.

I'm sorry to put you guys down but from my own experience. I'd a tonsillectomy last year and it was just unbearable. Put away all the dairy and supplement, stick with water. I've lost 15lbs during the recovery. Hydrocodone and whey cannot mix together. It'll throw your kidneys out of the space. Dairy food will build up mucus in your throat. Remember, don't eat anything sweet will make you cough. I was almost went to ER just because i ate some sugar free pudding and it caused me cough and it started bleeding so bad. No sticky food such as oatmeal or grits. Try not to clear your throat during the recovery time.
Foods that worked for almost everyone are water (drink as much as you can - 16oz every hour), ice chips (lot of it), grape popsicle, sorbet, gatorade (absolutely not oranage flavor or other citric flavors will burn your throat)
The pain will start on the 3rd day post surgery. Therefore, you need to intake lot of water the first 2 days. I heard some surgeons gave pills instead of liquid medicine. If so ask for liquid medicine and ask for numbing medicine too. Without the numbing medicine, I couldn't drink water or take pain killer medicine. Once the pain kicked in, my ears and lower jaws really painful.
Keep your head up at all time!
Don't worry about losing weight, you'll gain it back in no time.
