Is this a good thing to do (2 times a week) while bulking? Does it burn fat, or muscle?

yea dude do it, it will be even better if you take 200mg of caffeine before you run to get the heart rate up, and to assist in the fat burning. I was reading mens health and I forgot which absolutely disgustingly huge bodybuilder was doing it, but that was his routine every morning.
I am going to have to respectfully disagree with skinny_wawQUOTE=R3VOLUTION actually guys who curl curl for girls(curls for da gurls) girls dont care about legs so anybody who squats is more of a queer than a guy who does just curls.

but doesnt HIIT target losing fat?
heres a quote from a bodybuilding article
"A couple more tips concerning nutrition that can help drastically with fat loss goals are to perform HIIT workouts in the morning on an empty stomach, and to have a meal following the workout. Morning activities before food consumption are more effective at burning fat than the same activities done later in the day after having eaten. It's been shown in studies that fat is utilized up to 3 times more when cardiovascular exercise is done on an empty-stomach."Last edited by jaco45; 06-17-2009 at 08:37 AM.

HIIT on an empty stomach in the morning is not totally out of the question. I happen to think that it is a great way of burning fat without losing much muscle. I have tried HIIT in the mornings before breakfast before and it helped me to shave off quite a bit of fat and also provided a good challenge

alright guys, let's not turn this forum in to a bunch of name calling. it gets us nowhere and doesn't answer the starters question.
no one really has done a thorough scientific study (from what I've seen but I would love to see one if anyone has one) but here's my two cents:
if i do cardio in the morning/on an empty stomach, i would take BCAA's or EAA's prior to my run and do low-intensity for 15-25 min. personally i think doing HIIT on an empty stomach is asking to die. HIIT is tough enough when your glycogen stores are full, I can't imagine doing it on an empty stomach. the 3x more effective thing is most likely because you burn the same amount of fat in less time since you don't have to burn through your glycogen stores which I don't feel is a very good/fair comparison. Also, just because it's an article on bodybuilding.com doesn't mean its fact. Some of the articles are written by people who aren't always experts in the field of fitness. (Not to discredit bodybuilding.com for their excellent site)
the whole theory is that cardio is done in the morning/empty stomach is because you during cardio the first 15-20 min is spent burning glycogen from your glycogen stores that are refilled each time you eat. if you're glycogen stores have been used (i.e. while you were sleeping), then this process has already taken place and therefore you can get straight to fat burning. you're body then utilizes fat for energy. instead of needing to do 30-45 min of cardio you only need to do 15-25 min.Last edited by gkizzle3622; 06-17-2009 at 06:06 PM.

I do HIIT 3x a week right after i wake up on an empty stomach. I;ve definetly seen good results with fat loss, and I continue to get stronger on my bench and squat etc. So it works for me.
8/2009 Testing Results:
Bench- 225x8=285
Squat-260x13=365
Snatch-125x15=180
Clean-170x12=215
Total=1,045lb (I was the only junior to be on the 1,000lb list so I'm pretty happy with my results)
40 time- 4.69 (I'm a LB)
