whey before and after work out is good?

From what I know, the protein you'll digest from the whey is supposed to feed your muscles to prevent catabolism during your workout. So instead of your muscles feeding on the protein inside themselves, they'll feed on the shake. And you should always drink a protein shake after your workout. But I'd personally recommend eating a meal before you drink it post-workout. Hope that helps.

I wouldn't worry about the shake for energy. If I were to take a protein shake pre, it would be only in an attempt to prevent catabolism. And I'd drink it 30-45 minutes before I worked out anyhow. And liquids really don't require much to digest; food, however, is a different story. IMO, of course.
