From what I know, the protein you'll digest from the whey is supposed to feed your muscles to prevent catabolism during your workout. So instead of your muscles feeding on the protein inside themselves, they'll feed on the shake. And you should always drink a protein shake after your workout. But I'd personally recommend eating a meal before you drink it post-workout. Hope that helps.

Personally I try to avoid anything that takes effort to digest before a workout and stick with only a preworkout drink for energy. My thoughts on this is that my body will be wasting energy on digestion during my workout. Only my opinion.

I wouldn't worry about the shake for energy. If I were to take a protein shake pre, it would be only in an attempt to prevent catabolism. And I'd drink it 30-45 minutes before I worked out anyhow. And liquids really don't require much to digest; food, however, is a different story. IMO, of course.

You are correct with the 30-45 minutes before being good. I was assuming the op was taking right before hitting the gym.

If he took it right before, I'd think you'd be correct with the body expending its energy in order to digest the protein. I don't even see how it'd really help you in that time frame.
