how long after quitting smoking does it take for lungs to fully heal

anybody know about how long it takes for your body to completely heal? Is there a "point of no return" where a person's body just can't recover properly?

A long time. But in the end you can get back to where non-smokers were.

Depending on the extent of the damage, the lungs may never fully heal (i.e. some damage is irreversible)

props to you for quitting. do you feel better physically yet or is it still too soon to tell? have you noticed that cardiovascular activity has gotten easier with your quitting or no?

It takes time to damage the lungs from smoking. If the damage to your lungs have been done then it will take time to recover. But fresh air and healthy exercise is good for lungs treatment.

Can't really say. Genetics, climate (i.e. air quality), lifestyle (cardio), and how the person smokes (i.e inhales, holds it in. etc.) play a big factor.

I would guess after a few years, there would definitely be some irreversible damage. The cilia in your lungs (that sweeps out pollutants) may/may not grow back.

I am 6 months in after 16 years of heavy smoking.

    After 6 months ,

-I can run 3 miles in about 30 mins. ( Last year couldn't run a mile)
-My sex life is 1000x better, harder (*ahem) than ever
-I smell good, my teeth are white and clean
-I started to smell new things, foods etc.
    -I am not tired anymore
-My workouts feel easier, thus go harder/longer and lift more weight. = more muscle

The most fked up part of all this is that I don't even FUKING remember why I smoked, what it felt like...at all... I feel like I have never ever smoked in my life....

Not sure - but you shouldn't let that be the determinant in whether or not you quit. I'm a big advocate of "controlling the controllables". By quitting your smoking, you are taking the right step and however long it takes, it takes, but you should make the right decision, regardless.

I like that phrase...never heard it before. I would say I'm the same way. I try to actively avoid any/all addicting substances. Caffeine only plays a part in my pre-workout drink.

I smoked for about 4 years or so. I agree with everything ceno said above.

Depends how long and how many you've smoked.

Like someone already said, some damage is irreversibile

With regards to diseases/cancer it depends alot on how much you smoked and what age you give up. I think if an individual smokes 20 a day from age 16-35 and then gives up they have something like 1-5% higher chance by the time they are 50, of contracting a smoking related disease than an individual who had never smoked in their entire life.
It makes sense to give up and the earlier the better. I'm not sure the lungs could ever fully recover from a sustained period of smoking but it will certainly get close to it's best over time.
