What the hell? 600 crunches? That's the silliest thing I've ever heard.
BRB, crunching till I pass out and severe brain damage sets in.

I'm not saying all at once throught the day, and it does seem a bit extreme, so can anyone give me some great effective workouts that don't involve going to the gym
Thanks x

Big Spice Girls fan here. Those girls have a long history of eating disorders and overexercising, I wouldn't take much advice from them though. People need better things to do than 600 crunches, that would take way too long. Do a few sets of 12-15 with a heavy weighted plate and you'll feel the burn. Plates are cheap to buy.

If you want my input on abs, I would tell you that cardio is the key to getting your abs to show, A ab routine I would recommend would consist of the following exercises, reps/sets done 3 times a week on non consecutive days.
Leg lifts 4 sets - 15-12-10-8 reps
Reverse crunches 4 sets - 15-12-10-8 reps
Decline crunches 4 sets - 15-12-10-8 reps
barbell roll outs 4 sets - 15-12-10-8
side bends 4 sets -15-12-10-8

What you really need to focus on at this point, is your diet. When your diet is in check, it's peanuts from there. Next comes proper training, which involves core/compound movements as well as isolated exercises. Overhead squats, deadlifts, dragonflags, hanging leg raises, knee-ups, V-ups, swiss ball exercises, etc...are all good.
You don't need to train your abs more than 2-3 times per week, and they don't need to be worked out for an hour either.

No amount of crunches or cardio will help if your diet isn't clean.

Diet and if you want to really feel some burn do negatives with abs. IE: if you do a situp on an incline, hold your abs tight and sloooowwwwwwly lay back down. Holding a plate will make it even more torturous. But not nearly as torturous as the thought of doing 600 crunches.
A lot of women on these forums with visible abs work them the same as any other group, 1-2x a week. No reason to go overboard.

600 is excessive. If you're doing ab workouts properly, you can get great results with an accumulative 200 reps throughout a few different exercises. Even though you use your core muscles throughout the day every day, too many reps can be detrimental.

You can do sit up's and crunches till you are blue in the face it's still not going to help you
A) Lose weight
B) Get abs
Sorry but it's all down to diet. My gran had an under active thyroid and was told she could keep her weight under control by eating the right food. Now I'm not sure what food that was but I'm pretty sure it was all clean.
Of course diet and regular exercise will help no end.
Sorry but wtf, would you want to listen to anything the spice girls have to say - are you saying that you really Posh Spice looks healthy?
and I don't even think this is her at her skinniest.

Actually it's VERY easy to do especially if you base it off how much you can do in one setting. For instance:
*200 crunches 3 times a day
*300 crunches twice a day
*300 crunches, weights, 300 crunches
On days I do crunches I do the ab machine. I do 300 crunches with 40 pounds then 100 hyper extensions for my back and finish up with another 300 crunches with 25 pounds. And I don't pass out
I don't do that every day because just like any other muscle the abs should not constantly be worked. You can work different parts of abs everyday without over tiring the muscle. I do lower, upper, and obliques. I just cycle through that two times a week with one day of complete abdominal rest.
Also diet and cardio are two things that you can't go without if you want your abs to show.

I answered a similar question for someone in the over 35 section, here. You are 20, but the same principles apply. Start slow, build up slow, and stick with it.
Don't worry about what some celebrity supposedly does.
