Why are squats so good for you?

I know its the best leg exercise, but why is it so much better than doing separate leg exercises such as leg extensions, lunges, leg press and so on?

Do a few sets with heavy weight and you'll figure it out pretty quickly.

I did it for the first time today and started limping, yes I know its very intense, but why do people on these boards start flaming others when they say they don't squat?

If I had to stop doing every lift except one, I would keep squats.

They promote whole body strength and size by a) incorporating almost every muscle in the body and b) by jacking up test levels.

Plus they make your legs develop much faster than isolations and leg presses simply by virtue of the movement.

    GOTTA SQUAT!!!

Also, yesterday I worked out my traps so it hurt a lot when holding the bar on my back. I did this on a smith machine.

LOL, you would end up looking like a skinny rake with huge legs. And no they do not promote the who body in size, squats do not effect the arms at all. And no squats do not incorporate almost every single muscle in the body lol.

The muscles that are used in a squat:

    Traget

    - Quadriceps

    Synergists

    - Gluteus Maximus
    - Adductor Magnus
    - Soleus

    Dynamic Stabilizers

    - Hamstrings
    - Gastrocnemius

    Stabilizers

    - Erector Spinae

    Antagonist Stabilizers

    - Rectus Abdominis
    - Obliques

70% you say. I dont see how the following muscles are used in a squat:

    - Shoulders
    - Chest
    - Lats
    - Traps
    - Biceps
    - Triceps

how can you possibly say that calfs do not influence the squat, how do you think you balance with so much weight on your back? what is helping stabilise your leg when you are standing up straight, your calves are being used in-directly,

and if you perform the squat properly you should be using nearly every muscle in your body, you dont just push up with your legs, you have to get your upper body under the bar and use it to help you get out of the bottom almost like pushing yourself up...

it uses nearly every muscle if not every muscle in the lift either directly or indirectly..

hence why many people call it the king of exercises...

Haha indeed, i actually ment gastrocenmuis instead of soleus, but then again the soleus is also used in the squat.

But in saying that i can still bust out more calf muscles that are not used in the squat.

The "Gastrocnemius" is a calf muscle and the "soleus" is a calf muscle, i listed both of these in the muscles being used in a squat.

It was am mistake i made when writing calfs in the lower section. But now that you mentioned this i can still give you examples of calf muscles that are not used in the squat, for example:

    - Extensor digitorum longus
    - Flexor digitorum longus

Not to mention the two that i also listed above in the previous post.

And no if you are performing the squat properally you should nto be using nerly every muscle in your body, i listed every muscle used in the body when performing squats properally.

Maby you could list some more muscles that i diddnt mention?

how the f*** do you think you can even balance with the bar on your back without using nearly every muscle in your body, you have to balance or your going to fall over, they work every single muscle in your legs wether directly or indirectly at some point of the exercise or you simply arent going to complete it without falling over, along with many upper body muscles
