Rice vs Pasta - Which is Really Better?

    Hi,

Now I have asked quite a few people about this down the gym and nearly everyone says that rice is better than pasta however I cannot see why it is any better.

After searching the internet for answers for quite some time there are many different views. Most of peoples argument is related to GI.

Now the GI of brown (55-60) and basmati rice (65-70) is actually higher than normal pasta (50-55) and quite a bit higher than whole wheat pasta (40-45). I understand that wholegrain is better health wise as it has more fibre and minerals etc and has been less processed however macro wise there is very little difference. Does pasta do something different relating to spiking your insulin?

Every bodybuilder you see seems to eat rice (particularly brown) so someone please tell me whether this is really any better than wholewheat, or even normal pasta.

    Thanks!

I eat more rice than pasta. Brown, basmati, and long grain white rice.

Simmo0508 - I am expecting that answer from lots of people however what I am really interested in is why people eat more rice? Do you have any reason or is it just down to taste?

I eat alot more rice than i do pasta but my rice vs pasta...the pasta wins IMO.
I tend to eat rice alot more though cause i like me some rice/chicken.Plus i can eat the rice plain and i gotta have some sauce for the pasta which bumps the total cals up to 250 per serving for me with the sauce i like.
    Rice: cals 150

That's a good point actually touchofevil04 relating to the sauce. Personally a like to add a small amount of sauce to either however if I was cutting really strictly then I'm not sure I could eat my pasta plain where as I could with rice.

Yeah i mean if i could eat it plain like rice i know i would eat it alot more but seeing as most sauces range from 60-100cals for a half cup it kinda makes pasta a every now and then meal for me.
I find if i put it in a bowl i can run a serving and a half with a single serving of sauce 1/2cup and kinda stir it up better than on a plate. Cuts down on extra cals this way and makes it more doable for me while cutting. Plus this way i end up getting 15.5grams of proteinz from my pasta/sauce lol.

I like pasta with sauce...not sure how better it is nutritionally, I just LOVE pasta
I know that pasta has protein and fiber and has some vitamins/minerals.
    I'm sure rice is similar.

So are there any rice lovers out there that eat it rather than pasta for any reason other than taste and not needing a sauce?

For me, it's easy to keep packaged in my containers for work for my meals. I like pasta though, but the volume of it gets too much to package away cos i usually have around 100g carbs in most of my meals. Rice has lesser volume, for higher nutrient and calorie content.

Also it is easier to mix and mash up with vegies and cut up chicken/steak.

So bearing in mind the volume of pasta compared to rice do you think pasta would keep you full longer than rice?

I have a lot of pasta at the moment but when I start bulking again in a few weeks I know I will be struggling to eat enough carbs so maybe if rice won't fill me up as much I should try switching to this? What do you think?

Also do you think the weight of 100g of cooked pasta is different to 100g of cooked rice or will it be much the same. Pasta definitely seems to be more volume. I wondered if that is down to the extra air because of the shape or maybe extra water uptake in the cooking.

If pasta takes in additional water and weighs more after cooking maybe this would have some impact on how filling it is? This theory could be a load of crap though so what do you think Simmo?

Everyones different I suppose but interesting. My appetite is quite small and it doesn't take an awful lot to fill me up so I have lots of small meals.

What do other people think - Rice or pasta fill you up the most if you have identical weights of the stuff.

A healthy diet should include a variety of grains, therefore people should be including all of those in their diet.

Just off the top of my head, it's easier to cook and keep over time then pasta. Plus i believe no one eats just pasta and no sauce and with sauce you got sodium which people are terrified of and more calories that might mess up their macros

I eat alot of whole grain pasta i nthe morning. I might be a little off kilter, but i like it with some hard boiled eggs and a touch of olive oil. That is my breakfast at least 3 days a week. I eat alot of rice too, however, i think that pasta keeps me fuller longer.

I eat more pasta than I do rice - not because of any staggering health benefit or anything, but because it is alot quicker to cook up a serving of pasta than it is rice and I ALWAYS screw up making brown rice. It turns out gelatinous and creamy.

    Barilla Plus Pasta:

    1 Serving (1/2 cup uncooked):
    Cals: 210
    Carbs: 38
    Fat: 2
    Protein: 10

I just like rice, and I incorporate it into a lot of my main meals. So it accounts for the majority of my carbs..but I still keep the oats in the morning.
    I rep back everyone

Yes, well my understanding is that it is, however because of the way it has been processed it is lower GI and better for you than standard white rice which is very high GI. Not that GI is the be all and end all once you combine with other foods but I think there is some other benefit in it being a long grain, perhaps more fibre and minerals, so thats's why I seperated white and Basmati in the poll

white rice is white rice when it comes to fiber and minerals dude, it make no difference being long grain. Lower GI does not equate with more fiber and minerals.

Either way, I've seen brown basmati rice before.

    Correct

Although they may look similar to the eye when finished cooking, basmati does have a different profile like you said.

Surprising to see oats winning so easily, seeing as though most people are talkin about rice and pasta here at the moment. Lurkers should posttt :P

I thought that rice would be higher than oats as well. I do have quite a lot of oats though. Tend to have pasta for solid meals and sometimes rice and then I mix in some ground oats into a shake for convenience once or twice a day depending on training.

Do you think there is any real benefit in brown rice over basmati as I can buy basmati for about 30% of the price of brown in the UK so thinking I may just go down this route unless there is some major differences in nutrition. Same sort of thing with pasta. Standard pasta is wayyyy cheaper than whole wheat. Seems that for the healthy stuff you gotta be prepared to pay more. No wonder the world is turning obese!

With my food bill at around 200 pounds/month trying to find some ways of saving cash!

I know I'm bumping an old thread, but given that this is exactly what I am thinking about now, I feel like posting.

Oats is easily my main source of carbs because I have oats for breakfast everyday. All the other listed items, I may or may not have in the day, but oats everydayyyy. Why? Because it's so easy to mix my protein powder for a quick meal (always in a rush in the morning). Depending on how many calories I wish to consume, I either decrease or increase serving size of oats, sometimes I like to add some eggs or honey too.

Otherwise, Brown and/or White Basmati Rice is next on the list. If I can fit those carbs in on a particular day, I will eat it. I simply prefer the taste of Brown over White rice, no other reason I eat brown.

Pasta I rarely eat, but funnily enough, I think it is better than rice. Why? It has almost 4x the fibre for the same serving of brown rice (not to mention more protein than rice). Whenever I eat pasta, I ALWAYS opt for wholewheat, but when I eat rice I don't mind eating white (this is because I have read difference in white/brown rice is negligible, whereas difference in wheat/wholewheat pasta is noticeable). The reasons I guess I choose rice > pasta is rice is much more versatile (many more dishes can be eaten with rice) and it does not require sauce (I need to sauce my pasta).

But other than that, I would opt for the pasta because of fibre content. 4x more fibre is A LOT. There were times when I used to mix kidney beans, tuna and yogurt into the pasta, but eventually I got sick of it. Given it has been a long time since I have had that, I may incorporate into my refeed this weekend
