What Are They Worth?

I have a set of free weights that I am going to try and sell in a garage sale or online, as my wife just got a gym membership for the two of us. The only problem is that I have no idea what they're worth....

It is a set of standard weight plates (not olympic), in a variety of sizes, totaling 475 lbs. This also includes a curl bar, a bench press bar and two trees for storing the plates.

What is this set worth?

try to sell them for between $.40-.50/lb. you can try for more, but that's about what most of us here would pay for weight.

I wouldn't pay that but that is what I would ask for them too.

I was kind of thinking that they might be worth about $.40 per lb (they're metal plates), but was thinking about asking about $.25-$.30 for the sake of making sure they sell pretty quick.

I wouldn't pay that but that is what I would ask for them too.

well, you're right. .30 is about the most i pay these days. if i was just starting my gym up, then .40-.50 isn't unreasonable

I was at a garage sale yesterday and a guy was selling standard plates and some bars. He was asking $15 for 50s and $8 for 25s. I offered him $30 for two 25s and two 50s, and he wanted $35. I offered him $20 for 2 York 50s and he took it. So that's .20 a pound and I'll bet not many people were buying. He told me that someone else was looking for olympic plates. I would start at .40 a pound tops and consider any offers close to that.
Remember that you have to sell them at what the person buying is willing to pay, not what they are worth to you.

^^^ I agree. I've sold standard plates in good shape for 25c per pound. Had to hold out for that price, too. I've had people offer as little as 5c per pound for standard plates. I politely decline those offers.

I got a guy comin today to pick up some standards that are rusty and most don't even match and I got .30/lb for them.He said he might be back to get the other 300 another time if I'll hold them.

Actually California is huge. For example, from San Francisco to Los Angeles is like 5 hrs.

I'm in Michigan and 2 hours drive doesn't get you anywhere.
