how is the wall thickness of steel tubing being measured?

i was wondering how the wall thickness of steel tubing is being measured.
11ga is 1/8" or about 3mm. Does that mean that each wall of the tubing is 3mm thick
or that both side walls together are 3mm thick and each single wall of the tube is
1.5mm thick?

If you are thinking in square or rectangular tube, then It's each of the walls of the tube...

* Example: An 11 gauge 2x2 inches square tube, has 4 walls, each wall has around 3mm thickness...

(I believe 11 gauge it's around 3.030mm)

Maybe, to get the thickness concept, it's easier to think first on circular tube (becouse it only has one wall)...

* Example: 11 gauge, 2 inches diameter circular steel tube, it is around 3mm wall thickness...

thanks a lot for the info guys.
Then my "11 gauge tubing" advertised lamar rack has a whooping 14 gauge safety rails (steel is about 2mm thick, WITH the paint finish on it). I measured them with a sliding caliper at the holes where you insert the dip bars. I guess 11ga is only the uprights then. It's sad that they saved on the metal in such an integral part of a power rack :-(

Yea thats sad! My Parabody has about twice the thickness on the spotter than on the uprights.
