Ive been in the Army for a few years now. So far Ive been doing pt everyday but nothing really weight training wise, until I graduated from college. Now I weigh about 130 and have a shot at getting the Ranger tab. No way would I be able to take the school with my weight. I started lifting recently but dont know really where to start with my diet and routine + the constant cardio that I do.

Take in 1.8 gr of protein per pound of body weight, and work out regularly. For ranger school, you need core, hip, lower body, and shoulder strength as a priority. You really need to put on what ever kinda weight you can get, fat/muscle/water. Drink lots of water and eat a lot of carbs to pick that weight up. Dont lift on cardio days since your trying to throw some weight on. Make sure you get a good 10-12 hours of sleep so you can grow. Dont take any supplements besides protein powder and BCAAs as your body will be wondering where the rest of that **** is when you go to Ranger school and its gonna feel really bad for a while.

Seeing as you have a good year to get ready, I would just get in the protein, and lift 1 day and do cardio the next. There are some great books on military strength training, I really like the Navy SEAL physical fitness guide, lots of great stuff in there plus a hoisery of information. You wont be looking to workout like bodybuilders/athletes as your field of expertise requires different physical demands.
You really wanna get a nice amount of fat on you as well, so you dont need to eat totally clean. Eat some pizza every 3 or so days til you get to your desired body fat percentage. (I love gaining with Pizza )

Being in pretty good army shape (300 APFT, 12+ pullups, 40 minute 5 mile run in boots) is good enough for Ranger school.
The more important aspect is the mental and psychological. You will see alot of athlete studs drop out because they can't deal with the cold, lack of sleep, or starvation. I saw a few SEALs drop out because they weren't used to the starvation (BUDs doesn't starve their students).
Just remember to never quit. They are not allowed to kill you at Ranger School, so take comfort in that fact.Last edited by rnaco; 06-07-2009 at 09:37 PM.
