    Bagels vs Oats

Why is it that Oats are 'prefered' over bagels? I must be spacing out. I am truly suprised at how stumped i am by this. normally i have a strong grasp on nutrition.

    Oats 1/2 cup

    Calories -150 /full cup -300
    Fat -2.5 /Full cup -5
    Carbs -27 /Full cup -54
    Protien -6 /full cup -12

    Bagel
    1/2 bagel

    Calories -140 /Whole bagel -280
    Fat - .5 /Whole -1
    Carbs -29 /Whole -58
    Protien -5 /Whole -10

the differences is seriously just a nitpicking detail. give or take 2 to 10 here or there, doesnt matter. Im just curious as why Oats are overwhelmingly used in BB over bagels considering their practically the same product. Bagels are complex carbs, correct?

bagels arent complex carbs at all, they are fast absorbing, doesnt matter if they are whole wheat or not, bread is bread

    wrong.

    wrong.

    wrong.

OP you are exactly right, they are highly interchangeable. variety is nice, eating both would be advisable. oatmeal might also offer greater satiety if that is an issue for you currently.

where do people get this stuff? I mean you said it yourself "whole wheat", why on earth do you think this is completely different to "whole oats"?

From a "dry" standpoint, i believe they are interchangable, oats might have more fiber content though, not sure.

The difference for me comes when oats are cooked. The water absorbed triples their volume, and it more filling and satisfying. Bagels, conversely, are very calorie dense and are eaten quickly and don't fill my stomach up as much.

Maybe I'll try soaking my bagel in 1 cup of water and microwaving it!

Seems like everyone has the same idea i do. Their pretty much interchangeable.

its just when you hear pro bodybuilders or nutritionists, their always 'oats, oats, oats' , you never hear them say anything about bagels.

Food quality does not change the laws of thermodynamics. Provided you consume adequate protein, EFAs, fiber, and vitamins and minerals you can eat whatever you want.

The only difference between a 'clean' and a 'dirty' food is how much of it you eat.

The Glycemic Index is meaningless unless you eat carbs alone in a fasted state. As soon as you add fat, protein, or fiber to a meal or have eaten in the previous 4-6 hours the GI is irrelevant.

I think you should do more research on GI, of special note would be

    1) the methodology of the GI tests - especially the extremely artificial conditions created

    2) what happens to GI when you combine macro nutrients. look up the GI on a snickers.

    3) finally what exactly results in high GI foods? the correlations you're (i assume) thinking of really just don't exist.

Sir, i have done my research, find a study proving your point and that it shows that high GI foods=worse body composition or overall health
Brown rice, Baked Potato, Sweet potato, lentils, kidney beans, Orange Juice, Muesli, bananas, Mangos, pineapple, watermelon, and more all have higher GI than M&M's, Snickers, and choc. bars
Which foods would you say are better for overall health?? the higher or lower GI foods.

i duno, misc term - people become socialized to act as others do around them.

i actually think it sounds kind of cool, but i'm a law student, so my judgment is already suspect :P

The reason I eat oats over bagels is because oats are 10X cheaper. Plus I like eating them and if I'm in a hurry I can throw them in a shake and go. They also keep forever where as bagels go stale. I also mix it up and eat grits some days and hashbrowns others.

So is the GI content of a carbohydrate meaningless in terms of body composition???????

Forgive me on this question, its just that before joining this forum i was very much convinced that eating low GI was the big all and end all to getting lean (mainly through researching many bodybuilding and pre contest articles).

The concept that eating a bagel instead of oats for breakfast will give me the exact same effect seems ludicrous! Im not saying i disagree, i am willing to believe it.

Just makes me wonder why i have been eating boring old tasteless oats with water for so long when i could of munched on a tasty bagel.

You trying to say if you ate a 300 calorie bagel, and 450 calories of oats you would be leaner?

You have been eating boring old oats because you sir are brainwashed by Broscience.

I think you have been brainwashed.. lol, why is it so ludicrous to believe that a bagel would not be acceptable instead of oats for breakfast? Heck, I eat cereal and protein shakes for breakfast most of the time and have seen no negative effects..

I'm not very knowledgeable on the low GI / high GI subject as I never really worried about it that much, but I believe the low GI / high GI concept only matters if you are eating the carbohydrate in a fasted state by itself with no proteins or fats to go along with it. Obviously most of us are not in this position so we don't have to stress over it too much.

    Good luck!
