say you burn 2000 calories in a day. you ate nothing but carbs all day and little to no protein. (Say its someones birthday and they ate cake all day.)
they ate maintainance, 2000 calories, but NO protein. your body takes what it doesnt use and stores it as fat...but your body cant make protein on its own, so if he eats some protein, going over his maintainance, will it be turned to fat or not because his body needs it?

I think you just answered your own question. It doesn't matter if you view the protein as making him go over his maintenance levels. The body will use the protein to maintain muscle and the carbs will be viewed by the body as "extra" and we all know what happens when you eat above maintenance - no matter what macro it comes from.
