People with Social Anxiety..
I found this on another forum a while back and its so true.
"Everyone has some amount of social anxiety. They just deal with it differently. Some over-compensate and act out and speak loud to create an artificial air of confidence, others wear mohawks and try to be "different," others just try to blend in and do as their peers do.
In the end, since everyone has fears like me, I had no right feeling inadequate about it. You will learn that everyone even the extroverts are awkward at times."
It's all about digging away at it one day at a time. Force yourself into socially awkward situations everyday, even if its for like 20 seconds.
Most will probably ignore this advice, but I guarentee you the relief afterwards is so amazing. I hope tomorrow you will force yourself into that situation you hate

I once had an awkward moment, just to see how it felt.

LOL good example of an awkward position from my day.
Im at work in a clothes shop on the womens floor, I got into the changing rooms to get some clothes to put back out on the floor and theres a woman in a top and knickers standing there with two other women stood by her. I make some awkward ass eye contact with the woman in the pants and couldn't stop my eyes from wandering down even though in the back of my mind I knew it was the worst possible thing I could do at that moment. I just grabbed the clothes, went and didn't go back in til she had gone.
But yeah I felt socially awkward and can look back on it and lol.

I do agree with most of what was said, however, just because someone chooses to have a mohawk does not make them socially awkward. The same goes for any arbitrary choice of personal style.

Disagree. Mine came on pretty suddenly in my Sophomore year of highschool. It is all about brain chemistry. And my mom had it as well... I think it is genetic.

The impulsive temptation has its genetic root. But the behavior is learned. How to response to it is not completely out of control. In the most cases, the negative effects of anxiety can be mitigated. Your awareness can make difference. So his suggestion is still valid, which, I think, is great.

Psychology uses this modality to get people to overcome fears. For instance someone with arachnophobia is put in a room with a spider. The spider is in a jar. At the some point they hold the jar. At another point the spider is let free in the room. And at one point the person has the spider crawling up their arm. This takes many sessions though not guaranteed successful it has enough success to be used.

The way the ego works, you get a sense of self as a reflection of others peoples behavior around you. So you can either work popularity within this collective consciousness, or you can become aware of how people react to eachother and step outside of it, and as a result become one who acts, not one who reacts. Then being social is just as easy as being yourself. The goal is to see what behavior is automatic, or compulsive. If someone says a joke that you don't find funny, do you laugh anyway? Thats one example.
